There are plenty of pictures floating around. Most reviews show them. I can't post one at the moment, but I'm sure there was one posted in the last few days in these forums.

Also where does one get "koboroot.tgz"??? I see references/links to tophat software but I am not allowed to download using Firefox & will not use Chrome since I do not like the idea of logging onto a google account just to use a browser where everything I do is archived on the google cloud (yes I did check the chrome settings & what they save on the cloud as the default).
Strictly, you don't worry about the KoboRoot.tgz and just let the device update whenever it sees an update. But, otherwise, you get it from wherever you are told to get it from.

The KoboRoot.tgz file is the mechanism for updating the device. Hence when an update is available, the device will download it. Or if you are impatient, you download it using the link someone has worked out and posted.

The KoboRoot.tgz file is also used to add or fiddle with the software on the device. In this case, you get the file from the place the person who is producing this tells you to get it. They will supply a link or the software to produce the file.

I have to ask which KoboRoot.tgz? A file with that name in the .kobo directory on the ereader will trigger the upgrade/install mechanism.

Kobo's firmware comes with this file in the .zip archive along with another file and a directory. You would unpack all three into the .kobo directory as part of a manual upgrade.

The various patchers for Kobo also use that filename -- as an example, GeoffR's patcher generates that file to install the patches. Tophat Software's gliding computer uses that filename for their installer however it does make your Kobo Mini or Glo useless as an ereader (I don't know if anyone has tried it on a newer Kobo model and I would really recommend not trying it on an Aura One since without a removable internal uSD card, it's would be all too easy to brick your ereader.

If you really want to download the TopHat package using Firefox, you can go to the TopHat_Releases page and dig down from there: Index of /TopHat_Releases which bypasses the useless Firefox test.

I have not seen any pics of a "shelves" on the Kobo Aura One; guess I should check the other Kobo devices. Mostly I see just pics of a page of a book or a couple books.

Regarding the KoboRoot.tgz, docs show that it is needed to add stuff like the KOReader or CoolReader. The "how to" for adding an alternative reader has install 'fmon' then KoboRoot.tgz. But if it is already included then I won't worry about & just hope that the included file is what I need to add KOReader.

Think most docs are outdated.

There is no one KoboRoot.tgz. The installer for most patches must be called KoboRoot.tgz as when the Kobo firmware finds a file with that name in the .kobo directory, it will trigger an installation which allows installing files outside of the exposed FAT32 partition you see when you connect your Kobo to a computer. Look at the KoReader docs and you are told to install Start Menu (currently at Kobo Start Menu 09) or FMon (which now seems to be impossible to locate but you can use KFMon for the same purposes) before you can use KoReader. Both KSM09 and KFMon's install packages have a KoboRoot.tgz file but it is not the same file.

As for shelves or collections, not something I personally use. Being able to search author, title, series, etc. allows me to find the books I want without scrolling through pages looking for the right book.

Now I'm not sure what you want a screenshot off. There is a collections list. This simply shows the name of each collection and the number of books. When you view a collection, the list is exactly the same as the main library list. One of the menus will have an extra item or two, but that is only visible when you open the menu. The reviews around the place have decent pictures of these.

I think something along the lines of how Calibre or CC displays as the "main screen" when the Kobo is turned on as I think that the reader mode is what shows up as the 'home screen'. I have seen only screens with 1 or more books displayed obliquely or so.

The other thing I would like verification is that bookshelves = collections?
Do I do collections or bookshelves on the Kobo & Calibre? Seems alot of info is based on how to use/install/create bookshelves but not much about collections.

Hard to ask meaningful questions when I do not have the Aura One on hand to mess things up. Have come across about using Calibre to create my library structure on the Kobo.

gotta go do my daily tracking on where UPS has my Aura....

Same thing. See the MobileRead Wiki Kobo Shelves and Collections for more information though it is a bit dated.

Sounds as if you are getting tracking info. My latest UPS shipment is using UPS Supply Chain Solutions and they refuse to admit the tracking number I was sent (which the shipper insists is correct since it works for them ) is a valid number. I've got an office pool going on whether the tracking will start working before the package arrives.

Kobo introduced the feature as "Shelves" and two or three years later they were renamed to "Collections".

Then don't ask any questions. The device is on its way. Wait for it to come. Then put a couple of books on it and read a bit and play. Then work out how you want to organise things. Once you have used it, you might decide all these questions were silly. Or come up with a completely different set of questions. It won't harm anything to wipe the device after a few days and start again. And if you plan to do that, you will feel a lot better about any mistakes you might think you are making.

Maybe I missed this, but you can archive books in your Kobo cloud. Then they don't show up in you main library. They just stay there until you unarchive them. I do that after I've finished reading a book so I don't have to scroll through books I've already read. They are still there if I want them again in the future.

This is only true for books you buy from Kobo though. It wouldn't work for the sideloaded book chapters the OP wants a separate storage place for.
