The Hanlin has the same screen as the 505 and the Gen 3, a Vizplex screen, so there is definitely going to be a difference.

Also, I believe the only company selling the Hanlin in the US is Astek and they haven't started selling them yet. And If I remember correctly its going to be the same price or higher then the Sony.

It may also make sense to stay within the same family of reader if they share the same tastes in reading so that they can share books.

Yeah, she is a serious reader. She spends most of her money on books which is a rarity among teens these days. She also has similar tastes to my wife and myself so, we do want to stick with the Sony.

Actually, if there is another stimulus check coming, I may well use some of it even though the last one got used for bills as well.

Is she impulsive?
(meaning you think she's serious about reading for a long part of her life? Or is she more the type that likes the gadget, and in 1-2 months will probably have it laying around?

If money counts, get a 500.
If she's still using it in a couple of months, you might think of upgrading to something better!
It does the job really well, despite not being the latest technology anymore!

I wonder if the 500 differs that much from the hanlin.

The Hanlin and all current e-INK readers use Vizplex displays. The older display used on a 500 is no longer being made.

I was more mentioning the rest of the device,
HanLin also has 4 grey tints...
The screen might not be nice, but why not opening it up and put a sheet of printer paper behind it? That way you got a very white background! lol

As does the Cybook and every reader except the iRex and Sony devices.

eInk screens are opaque - you can put whatever you like behind it, but it won't "show through".

My view is that you better buy a 505 for her.
She will not have to spend money on books again.
300 bucks will not make you bankrupt.
She can repay from the money she saves on not buying books.
When I was 16 I wanted something very bad and my parents didn't bought to me.
Now I can buy whatever I want, but can't be happy, cuz I still have the memory not getting what I wanted when I needed. I can not trust other people, I can't believe that somebody can be nice to me if my parents weren't.
Of course you need to be realistic, but she didn't ask for a Lamborghini.
This age is defining in my view.
