Crap....really? Even if I sealed it in super-tight? Like if there was nowhere for the excess plastic to fill with air or expand to?

This, people, is why I make my living in the social sciences

Not to mention, not waterproof nor sandproof when you cut the openings - which defeats the purpose of the ziploc or vacuum-sealed bags.

Hi JanetCinNC,

That's why I mentioned that I wouldn't do that if I were going to the beach or somewhere similar.

I was thinking more along the lines of just general day-to-day protection...like to keep the buttons and crevices free of crumbs (I sometimes snack while I read), to be waterproof enough to handle a few drops of liquid, and to keep the reader in better overall condition.

Yes... Also, it would be hard to seal it too close to the device. At least on the sealer that I have there is always a gap between where it seals... because you can't close the sealer on the device.

You may be able to take one of those hand sealers and seal very close to the edge of the device. Of course, still once you puncture it, air will go in and it will not be "sucked" to the device any more. Might as well use plastic bag in this case.

But, if you are going to be putting holes in it, it won't be water proof anyway. If you just want something to protect the device from scratches I would say get a clear skin from Zagg or custom skin from bestskinsever.

Ooops, sorry, PsyDocJoanne - that's what happens when I read the thread from last to first - I forget some of the points of the discussion. Usually when people are talking about putting them in plastic bags, it's because they are reading in the bath or at the beach, so my mind jumped there.

Bob, just to go full circle here, day-to-day protection is what I was hoping for from the SkinIt...so have you tried the Zagg clear skin or bestskinsever?

Edited to ask another Zagg question....does anyone know if the clear skin covers the display, also? Or is it cutout, like the SkinIt ones?

I'm happy it made you laugh, and relieved to discover I'm not alone on this. I think one of the problems is that the open space for the screen put more stress on the material surrounding it, causing it to stretch out of shape. Maybe they should have designed as a solid piece with openings for the buttons and have perforations in the area surrounding the screen so that the user can remove that section after applying the skin. I think that might make it easier to handle.

I don't have a Zagg for the Reader... but I did get one for my son's iPod Touch and it is great, covers the whole thing.

However, looking at Zagg the Sony Reader one only seems to cover the screen. I thought they had both choices but I guess not. The bestskinsever is just a blank sheet that you cut out yourself. They don't have a pre-fitted one for Sony.

Of course, if I got the PRS-700 I would certainly get the screen cover. For $17 it would be well worth it to protect the screen from stylus/fingernail scratches.
