The dogs .... well, they are just plain sweet. I'm not certain why they get shy around some of the men here (it never seems to be a woman), but I suspect it might have something to do with cultural signals. By that I mean that a lot of the Mexican workers who are employed here (or come in as independent contractors) have been raised in a culture in which dog fighting is the rule, so many of them expect my dogs to be mean, and they react to them that way ... even though I can't really spot the difference in body language, I think the dogs can. It's a theory anyway. I've only noticed them to shy away from a few people, but all of those people have been culturally Mexican males. However, it is not all of such males ... there are some who have been around here for so long, and they know the girls and know the girls are sweet dogs. With those guys, it's business as usual for the girls .... they try to lick them to death. I have had several people ask me why it is that so many of my animals are so friendly, absent a few that were so badly abused that it will take a long time before they are really comfortable around other people. The truth is, I have no idea. I don't think I do anything particularly "special". |

![]() The only pet we have who seems to react to gender is my cockatiel, Lillis. I'm his person, so my husband is obviously his rival. So is our best friend (also male). But he reacts completely differently to my daughters or women who visit the house. He may not warm up to them right away, but he's not at all hostile. If I'm not home, btw, he will get all buddy-buddy with my husband (and our friend, if he's over visiting). But as soon as I come in... all vicious bird. Also, if the guys whistle, the bird starts whistling, to compete... but if I whistle, he shrieks at me. Evidently girls are to be seen and not heard. ![]() |

Sexist birds. I've always suspected there was something about them.

Let's not forget that this is the bird whose spoken repertoire consists of:
"What'cha Doin'?" "Who's a Silly Bird?" (or "Who's a Silly?") "What'cha Doin', Silly Bird?" and "Tweet!" (no, I don't mean a bird sound that humans spell as 'tweet', I mean he pronounces the word itself.) Queen Zelda gave him a knighthood for his performance, I believe. ![]() |

I still remember (not from the first run!) this bit on The Tonight Show:
My favorite part is when the bird calls the kitty. But nekokami's bird would probably better identify with the answer to "How does the wolf go?" |

In parts of Yorkshire, there is a sheep that actually says "baa" rather than "maa." Just thought you'd like to know that.
