Iliad is way too expensive to display to the public and NRC is not the succes as we all had hoped.
I imported my CyBook to the Netherlands via the US as the EU price is not helping popularizing ebook devices. While my CyBook is most open to all e-book formats Sony trying to get into the Dutch market with their own e-book format is not going to make it. Our Dutch e-book market is too small for a format-war. A library in Almere/Lelystad is experimenting with e-books In Dutch an article on biblion.nl activities May I remind you all that the Dutch embrace new technology: CD's, DVD's were more common while the rest of the world was still working with phono-gram rolls ![]() |

Well, this is certainly good news. The Dutch e-book market needs a bit more choice. Well, what it really needs is some zest, energy, and *new* devices and books. Sony is making a start but does that mean they'll sell Dutch books in the Connect store?

How many Dutch eBooks are actually published, as a matter of interest?

I don't have any numbers, but one major bookseller chain (Selexyz) says it's got 50,000 e-books. They sell in Mobipocket (they've got a deal with Irex and also sell the iLiad) and some PDF. I'm quite happy they've moved into the e-book market but, as a Sony Reader user, not so happy about the Mobipocket thing. An independent e-book seller is also heavy on the Mobipocket side. Either way there's some stuff happening but the most well known, and I reckon most sold, device is the iLiad. We need more choice here.

I'm surprised there are so many available - that sounds excellent!
It's the wide range of different sources of MobiPocket books that made me decide to standardise on that format. I hope that Sony do come up with a good range of Dutch books when the Reader is officially launched in the Netherlands. |

But if you're going to do that, why bother buying a Sony in the first place, especially given the fact that the CyBook is considerably cheaper these days?

If you live in the US, that's true. There are, I think, rather fewer reasons for people elsewhere. Although nobody could question the fact that the Sony is better constructed than the Gen3, I far prefer the Gen3 in terms of its software capabilities. What we need is a machine with the build-quality of the Sony which has decent MobiPocket support

Sure, having owned both a Sony and a Gen3, I'd be a bit of an idiot to try and deny something so blantantly obvious, don't you think?
What I dispute is whether the higher build quality of the Sony means that it suffers fewer screen breakages. Having a "prettier" case doesn't mean that it's any more resistant to damage. |

The problem is that they are mainly English language, not Dutch. That was the point I was trying to make earlier on, if they don't come with Dutch books I think the launch hasn't got much of a chance. |

900! Eeeek, I never really looked that closely! That sucks!
@Pilotbob: I haven't had a chance yet to sit down and 'liberate' mobi books...haven't really had a need to either. And @HarryT: I bought a Sony as my choices at the time were an iLiad or a Sony. Didn't have the dosh for the iLiad so I bought the Sony. And still happy with it too :-) |
