I like the new tag pane... but I don't like how it works. I would just rather see a list of all the tags rather than a categorized list of them. Also, I would like the list to be sortable by either apha order or popularity order. It would also be nice to have a tag cloud view.

Also, I would like to see the tag selection dynamically adjust the tag list. Either:

1. When a tag is selected display a second list with the tags of all the items that are tagged with the selected tag. Or...

2. As I select tags, just reduce the list as above rather than displaying a second list.

See delicious.com for a great tag UI, it has all the above features and more.

@pilotbob: Yeah the tag UI could be improved, but I'm not sure what the point of a popularity based sort/tag cloud would be. Those features are useful when the tags are used by a large population. Since the calibre database is not shared, what would be the point?

Also note that the tags list is sorted alphabetically right now.

Perhaps popularity is the wrong term. If you look at delicious you can list your tags by name or count. I really meant count... or how popular the tag was (how often it was used) in your database.

So, for example a tag that is applied to 25 items is more popular than a tag that is applied to 8 items. Of course "popular tags" on the delicious home page is based on how many tags are used across all users I assume. If you go to your personal page that isn't a section in the tag list.

(see tag options in delicious). My page is at http://delicious.com/pilotbob.

That is what I thought you meant by popularity, but I still dont see the point of it? I mean in what scenario is it useful to know which tags are the most popular in your own database? To be fair I've never really understood the utility of tag clouds either. I'm asking because if I understand the use case, there's a greater probability of my being able to design a useful UI

The main reason would be to see if I have more SF than Mysteries or that I have alot more of Terry Brooks than Dan Brown.

Tag clouds do the same thing, they are just more visible and you can see realtive differences easily. For example, go look at my LibraryThing author cloud at http://www.librarything.com/authorcl...?view=PilotBob (I think it's public) and you can quickly see that I have read alot of Diane Cary and Terry Brooks (about the same) and I've read a decent amount of Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton (the same as each other) but less than the first two. Of course this is all relative to my current library. The biger it is, the more popular.

As I said, sort by count and cloud are not as much wanted, but if you are writing the queries to figure out the count it is just a different way of displaying them based on that data.

What I think is more important is that ALL the tags are a single list and that the I have an easy way to focus in on the tags for example, if I click on "toread" I want to then see that within my "toread" items I also have items taged as "mystery" and "romance". And if I add "mystery" to my selected tags I can easily see that "Christie" and "Clark" are tags for the more filtered items.

Two ideas come to mind:

1) Adjusting the font size in the view based on count.

2) When a tag is selected, create a subtree of tags that the books matching it also have.

I'm not sure why you want a flat list of tags. The reason for the tree structure is to allow you to more quickly browse the list of tags.

I can live with the tree as long as if you do item 2 above I get a flat list in that subtree.

Also, you probably want to make 1 and option. Every one should be ok with 2 all the time, since it will just be adding info.

I think I'll just add the tag count to the right in brackets of each tag name and add a config option to sort tags by popularity instead of name.

The subtree will be a flat list.

Can you opena ticket summarizing this discussion. At the moment I'm still spending my time on EPUB, but when I get around to working on the GUI again, I'll do this.

I'd be happy to help with the doc. Is it possible you could move it to a Wiki, or provide a Wiki to put it in. That would make it easier for users to update it.

The main problem is... how would I know what new features and options you added to each version to be able to document it? Do you at least keep release notes for each version?

You should also note that there is already documentation maintained by me in the User Manual. You can contribute to that as well if you want to.
