The reason for my question was to learn how many books were placed in a given directory. Remember we're using a FAT formatted file system.

But pardon me for interrupting your thread.

Why do you think that? This has been discussed here plenty of times with no satisfactory answer. A few people have implemented things, and, as far as I can tell, none have worked particularly well. Or survived very long. If any had, you wouldn't be fumbling along like this.

you do not need to modify koreader for doing this as it can navigate hidden folder and has already basic copy/cut/paste function. But you could make a script in KSM to move your books for a (hidden) directory to another. And then you would like to reenable the "simulate_usb_connection" from FMON removed from KSM but still present in the code (you just need to drop the png in the right file directory). But using this (simulate... can be quite sensitive). You would like to go to the KSM09 thread for that.

But, at this point, one question : why don't you use koreader as a main reader or at least give it a try ? It should get rid of at least three of your problems : the database size (koreader has none), the folder question (you can make folder in koreader library), and the usb thing (no need).

What exactly do you mean by this?

The hidden directory information is extremely well hidden in the threads of this forum. And this is a simple concept. And half the answers in this thread were unsolicited remarks on how I mistake RAM for storage memory, or how I should know how many books not to put in a device officially advertised to be able to hold 28,000 books.

Sorry, but using a hidden directory has been well discussed in this forum. It has been mentioned many a time as a way to get nickel not to see some books. And has been asked about many times when people are having problems where nickel seems to ignore books.

The comments about RAM vs storage were probably prompted by my reading of your first post as you seemed to think the Aura ONE LE was more different to the Aura ONE than it actually is. Plus in that post I did ask about trying to work out how slow it was and when. Answers to those questions might have prompted other suggestions on what to do. And, of course, I was just curious about where the problems were. I haven't gone past about 5000 books on any of my Kobo devices and haven't felt a real issue with speed. But, I also don't expect it to be particular fast or even need it to be.

But, if you actually read the post you quoted, I was commenting on only one of your statements. That is why I trimmed your post down to just the bit about triggering nickel to import the books. You are fumbling around about this because no one has found a good and safe mechanism to do this. You posted in another thread discussing this and the methods discussed had problems. Your statement of "And please, do not say it cannot be done" seemed to be saying that it has to be possible. But, maybe it was a plea to ask that we don't tell you that it has already been proved impossible.

I suppose my overall point is that if you are expecting the answer to be simple, then stop. It isn't. It has been discussed here over the years, and there hasn't been a good answer. By all means, investigate if you want to as maybe you will find something. And that will make people happy.
