Only AZW DRM has been cracked. AZW1/TPZ both known as Topaz has not been cracked. AZW is just a slightly modified Mobipocket format.

It works! I tried it on both a book that I own and the Freebie The Surgeon, and they converted just fine. This is awesome, as I now can buy from the Amazon store with abandon and be able to continue my reading on the PC. I'd guess that the 1 and Topaz formats will eventually be cracked also. I have 14 books that I bought from the Sony store so hopefully the lrf can be cracked so that I can read them on the Kindle (I have the Sony 505 but I like the Kindle so much I never use the Sony).
Just to see what error message I got I tried it on an Amazon sample and it said unknown encryption. |

Ok, so after doing reserch on the Cybook Gen3 it seems there is a third device in the race. I guess I need to keep trying to understand the ebook selection and formats in order to make the best decision. It seems like the kindle books on amazon are chaper than I am finding other places. But if I understand the above posts I can convert the kindle books to be useable on the Sony. It also seems like lots of books are available in the mobipocket format that I could use with the Cybook, although Amazon still seems to be the cheapest ebook retailer. AHHH, for a somewhat computer illiterate like myself this is getting really confusing.

You can't convert Kindle books for Sony unless you have a Kindle. Each Kindle has an ID. That ID is embedded into each Amazon book. The DRM stripper needs that ID (and that the embedded information show that the book has been sold to that ID). And you cannot buy Kindle versions from Amazon unless you have a Kindle (and you can't buy and return because when you return a Kindle that Kindle ID's is deactivated).

That stinks, I really like the kindle book selection and prices, but I am leaning towards the cybook or sony device. Maybe I just need to keep traveling with 5-6 books on me and deal with the extra weight!

Just wondering why you're discounting the Kindle so quickly

I have read many reviews of the kindle that say it is a pain to use apparently it is way to easy to accidentally turn a page, is seems as if every review has mentioned it. Plus while I do like the kindle store I don't want to be limited to it, and the impression I am getting is that I would only be able to use that specific store, I would like to be able to shop around and be able to get stuff from the library.

I find it easier to use than the Sony. After using it for months, you might press the next page button accidentally once in a while, but it's not an everyday occurrence.
And you can use ANY store that sells Mobipocket, which includes all the major ebook sellers. I buy books at Fictionwise without a problem. Also, most online libraries offer PDF or Mobipocket. You can't use PDF but you CAN use Mobipocket, so that's a huge library selection right there. Go to your library and look at its Mobipocket selection. |

Buying a Kindle certainly doesn't restrict you to buying books from the Kindle store. The Kindle will read any DRM-free MobiPocket file - it's very easy to buy books in other formats (especially Microsoft Reader "LIT" format) and convert them to MobiPocket.

For DRMed books there is a utility that allows you to determine the Mobipocket ID for your Kindle and buy DRMed ebooks then use "kindlefix" on them to read them on the kindle. They are still DRM protected. If you don't plan to format shift or break DRM and be able to shop at multiple places your best bet is a mobi supporting device such as CyBook, iLiad, BeBook/Hanlin V3, DR1000. Less selection will be secure Adobe ebooks that only the Sony 505 will be able to read. Anyway... I just wanted to correct your understanding that you can "only" get ebooks from Amazon for the Kindle. BOb |

Thanks for clearing all of that up. I had originally started convinced that I wanted a Kindle, then swayed the other way, so I am glad to hear that the problems I thought existed with the Kindle are not really problems.

Also, my library uses PDF format, I checked this morning. |

What is your library's website? I haven't found any library that carries just one format, they usually carry both.
ALL ebookstores' books are DRMd. No matter what format you buy it in. Once you register your Kindle's ID on the site (or Mobipocket Reader's PC ID, doesn't matter), this is all you do: mobidedrm bookname.prc newbookname.prc ID For library books this is all you do: kindlefix.py Bookname Kindle ID That's it. To find out your Kindle's ID all you do is: Kindlepid Kindleserialnumber It's that's easy once you download the tools (the last two come bundled together) and it's all free.
