indeed, you probably are right. it is a risk involved that should not be taken lightly.
that said, i've checked MY serial adapter, i did connect to rxd/txd. maybe on other models will not work, or it will burn your kindle. to answer your question, i *only modified vcc. from 3,3v it suploes now 1,8v. rxd and txd are connected directly. i thought they only carried data, not voltage. so maybe i got lucky, or maybe as you said the kindle was able to work with 3,3v if that was what it got on rxd/txd. probably geekmasters' solution is best. but i haven't found there what he did with the power supply
