Maybe there's still hope for iLiad users.

We have to take a look at the new SDK, but I've always thought that a Developers Reward Program, ($DRP) would be great.
at least it would help to buy the latest gear.

-----
Anyway, I will probably be selling my iLiad V2 for what I think is a really good price.

I was concerned about battery life (DR1000), but then I thought that, no matter what, it had to be better anyway.

The offer will be for Mobileread users only.

I'm pretty irritated about their failure to deliver the new multi-format viewer they've been promising.

Adam, I bought my iLiad largely because of all the ports you did. (And Scotty1024.) If you abandon iLiad development, the value of iLiads everywhere goes down.

Including yours!

I think I've decided to keep my iLiad. But mostly because I remembered that I have the power switch issue that plagues a few people. Turning it off and on can sometimes take a few swipes of the switch. I don't want someone else to get stuck with a nonworking device that won't power on.

IMO, it's still not 100% clear whether or not they'll be adding that to the iLiad. Recent statements would suggest that they aren't adding new functionality, but on the other hand they've been talking about a new viewer framework for a long time (probably even last year). Is that considered "new functionality"?

Hopefully there will be a definitive answer from iRex on that soon. It doesn't sound likely, but I'm still holding out at least a shred of hope.

I suggest we setup a chipin, with a goal of $425, half the cost of a new DR1000SW, to defray the cost of Adam keeping his iLiad. The last one was setup by jplumey for the "MobileRead Community", see Calibre's new features - ePub support and automated news download!. I am hoping that someone with chipin experience will volunteer to set this up, although by making the suggestion I realize that I may get stuck with organizing it.

Even if Adam keeps his iLiad, it sounds like he's not planning on doing much more development for it.

My thoughts on "new functionality": The Universal Shell that the 1000 has fits into the "universal reader with plugins" that they were promising for the iliad. But as they said they will not backport features, I think we can forget the plug-in based reader for the iliad.

OTOH, they say they have a patched Qemu with e-ink screen emulation; if that is open-source, it can be VERY interesting if it can be used inside the VMWare devel image for the iliad.

And finally, this explains why they were so slow releasing new firmwares for the iliad: they were frenetically coding the new app stack for the 1000.In fact, I'm surprised that they managed to release some firmware updates at all. After all, they have upgraded the delta chip, rewritten the shell from scratch, ported a webkit-based browser... and it's very probable they've have changed also the Java VM for Mobipocket (which will have made them rewrite some parts of it too).

Anyway, the universal reader framework has advantages (scribble support, consistent UI), but one very crude disadvantage: it's tailored to new apps, not to porting apps. Only those apps that have a well-defined rendering engine (i.e. poppler, webkit) will be easy to port to a framework like that..

Certainly I would love to know how to do the partial updates needed to implement scribbles ourselves (and I think that would be more useful than the universal reader with plug-ins)...

I hereby selling my Iliad.. anyone want my brand new iLiad V2?
I will never EVER buy another product from iRex again. The level of support and software/firmware quality is to be ashamed.
Using us that are on the frontline of new tech as paying beta testers to make a product that is based on the communities feedback, but leaving us out in the cold with descent software as we would expect a device to work? No thank you!
From now on I say: take a look at Sony, Kindle, Hanlin, Bebook etc.. all better then this.

Oh.. Karel.. nice to show you face around then there is an announcement to make.. but other then that.... don't bother!

Adam?
If there's work to be done, and I'm able to do it, I'll definitely keep working on the iLiad.

Lately, real life has gotten in the way...

I have been meaning to go back to Linux on my home computer, and if I can leave my iLiad at home (and have the DR at work), it may be what I need to get back into it.

I've really been meaning to see what all can be done with Antartica's new display manager.

If iRex really isn't going to do a new viewer framework for the iLiad, it would be terrific if someone could merge the different iPDF variants into one.... We could start a chip-in fund, if there's a developer interested.

I just planned to start a project - iManga. Its purpose is to add cbz and cbr format support (mainly for jpg and png) based on fullscreen iPDF source code.
Though my own Java version iManga already makes me satisfied, I am also bothered with not being able to make button panel disappear. That's why I want to borrow some code from fullscreen iPDF to build a C version iManga.
Since DR1000 comes out, and effort on iLiad may be hard to move to DR1000. Perhaps I should stop the small project.
Well, I have to thank iRex for releasing DR1000, because it persuaded me not to spend too much time on toying my iLiad.

If the DR's software is mainly open source and it's not too heavily tied to the hardware, we could possibly port some parts of the DR's software back to the iLiad. Can't wait to see some of the source code
