3.4.1 is where the Mini self-updated. The reason I probably wouldn't want to drop down to 3.19.5761 is because (unless I misremember) you need something newer than 3.3.1 for the Full Screen hack? JSWolf's upgraded hyphenation dictionary appears to work with firmware 3.11.xx and above, but it's in an H2O thread, does that matter? (I wouldn't want to brick the Mini.) Is there any way to just turn off the hyphenation dictionary? (Lots of questions, sorry.)

I can confirm that's where my American Mini went also. Just curious why you dropped back to 3.19.xx. Did 3.4.1 have issues?

A minor correction. 3.19.5761 is newer firmware than 3.4.1. 3.4.1 was released in mid-2014 while 3.19.5761 was released late December, 2015.

The dictionary works fine on my Aura. I would bet it runs fine on any Kobo. But I'm not an expert. |

EDIT: Nope. No chess. But, "oh well" – a huge improvement in display. No single letter hyphenation that I can see, no huge gaps in text. The Mini also seems more responsive. To make sure I got the right firmware I just changed the affiliate name to RakutenBooks and did a sync. The "lazy" way. Thank you. Last edited by rcentros; 03-28-2018 at 05:22 PM. EDIT: Glad I was corrected here. 3.19.x makes the Kobo Mini much nicer. It even markedly improved the detail in the graphic's display. Last edited by rcentros; 03-28-2018 at 05:40 PM. |

I wonder if you have a defective Kobo Mini? I have two, and find the screens excellent (I also have a Kobo PaperWhite 3, Kindle Keyboard, Kobo Aura HD, and Kobo Aura). There is no such thing as "brightness" on a non-side-lit E Ink screen; perhaps you mean "contrast"? I'm not sure of a way to adjust that on the Mini, but as long as the ambient (room/outdoor) lighting is good, I find the reading experience excellent on the Mini.

I had a
Kobo Mini and had no problems reading books on it. I took it with me while riding everything in major amusement parks. May be not best screen but ok. Gave it to my grandson's girlfriend. Would like to buy another. |

I used to have a Kobo mini. Bought it for my girls. It worked great for years. Around last July it started coughing at running 4.x firmware, but otherwise it’s a fantastic little device. It seems the OP has wandered off to eBay, but it’s a shame they didn’t give the Mini more of a chance. No, it’s not backlit. Yes, it’s old. But it’s a functional ereader. I hope whoever buys it from them off eBay realizes what a cute li’l gem the Mini is.

Sorry everyone I wasn't getting notifications (must look at that as I used to be set up for email notifications), and thought the thread had petered out.
Thanks, I may do that. I'm offering it to my son and waiting for his reply... *eyeroll* Bought one for each son when they were half price ; one hardly used it and it has now come back to me - the other used it loads, it kickstarted him into the reading habit, but he broke his. This is a few years ago. I'm not going to fiddle with fonts as I don't think anything will be clear enough for me on this screen. "Reasonable lighting" includes the bedside lamp, for me! I'll stick with my kindle Paperwhite which is no effort to read on, but disappointed as I'd have switched allegiance. I dislike Amazon's ethics and I love the Kobo mini being so small and lightweight. Never mind.! Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk |

The old Vizplex screens on the Mini are poor compared to a modern Pearl screen. It's got a hazy quality and you need to refresh it at least every couple of pages to keep the text fading to an acceptable level.
Because of the screen, I never use the Mini now. The Aura Edition 2 isn't that much bigger if i need something portable. |

As for the mini's screen, I ended up getting used to the haze, and even set the refresh rate to 16 pages, as the refresh bothered me more than the screen itself. |
