Ok i did that. And to be fair: most of the results i checked are related to earlier versions of sigil, sometimes back to 0.5.3.
I used a long time the windows version and since some month the mac version. I have only "trouble" with two books, one 83 MB in size, the other 22 MB in size. These are my largest ebooks. And yes, Sigil is slow when loading them, but afterwards no more. As you can see, a lot of people were trying to help you and checked their largest ebooks. And a lot of things are pointing into your particular direction. Your epub has 1.4 mb, that's not large. I have ebooks with covers even larger then this. Maybe you can just attach your epub in this thread? Otherwise i guess the only answers you will get is "its not slow here". On the other side: if you are lucky with Jutoh, everything is fine, isn't it? //Maui |

You did not do as we asked by posting any stats on file sizes and image sizes nor images sizes by generating a simple directory listing of the Text and Images directory. Nor did you post a sample epub of just one chapter again as you said you would.
We can not help you if you do not, as we tried to recreate the problem but found we have no problems handling large epubs with many images that are properly formatted. If you want help, simply post the sample epub we asked for so that we can recreate the issue. If you are just writing to complain, please do that someplace else as no one else can recreate what you are seeing. Quote:

Yes everything is fine. I'm not stirring up trouble I'm making a report about an important software.
sigil 0.9.9 which is what Mint Linux installed with sudo apt-get install sigil Earlier in the thread others said "I used just now to edit a big book and it worked." Which makes me wonder about memory leaks. When I start sigil up with my book it works at first. Slowly for certain operations but it works. But if I leave the GUI up all day, so I can peck at the keyboard in between doing other things, it gradually gets noticeably worse. Eventually, for instance trying to highlight a page section and then to click "edit cut" just freezes. A ghost edit menu will pop down with no lettering. 2 minutes later the menu will become active. This is a problem worth knowing about, for both users and developers. |

Please do a ls -l inside the epub's Images directory. You are using "du" and it is reporting that the disk space utilized to store the images is 81,980k bytes or roughly 80meg of images!
I am not sure what the empty ncx document is meant to show. A simple ls -l done in the epub's Images/ directory when unzipped would help, as would a count of the number of images img tags in one file on average. So please try the following in your directory of xhtml files or in the root of your epub: grep "<img " `find ./ -name "*.xhtml"` | wc That will give us a count of the number of image tags in all of your xhtml files and we can divide by the number of files to get how many images per page on average. I'm trying to finish building a new boat and to finish a book, now using Jutoh, which continues to work without a hitch. So I've been a bit slow to respond. I have to wash the epoxy resin from fiberglassing off my hands before attacking the keyboard.
Do I mean mean "alphabetical" order" in the listing above? No. Both sigil and Jutoh both organize the wysiwyg TOC in a top to bottom sequence that is configurable, that is different than what `ls -l` produces on a unix system. That's all I meant. That's why the Introduction.xhtml wasn't the first listing above. I like the sigil GUI better than Jutoh's. Sigil is a bit more intuitive. I'd switch back to sigil if it wasn't so slow. The listings above are already out of date. I got them by unzipping the epub I made with sigil, which is now larger, with more sections and a larger number of images--as made now by Jutoh. I've been selling passwords that grant access to online boat building instructions since dinosaurs roamed. Now I'm trying to get rid of web pages and to replace them with epub. Jutoh works by default as epub but it can be made to export as epub3, which I will eventually do. Once finished I will offer an epub2 download for devices but I will use my own server-side PHP-based software to dynamically display the corresponding epub3 version as webpages (that will be accessible only to those who purchase a password). The TOC file in epub3 is a lot easier to parse. Epub3 also makes embedded video possible. My customers (I have sold a few short of 3000 passwords since 2000 or so) clamor for supplementary how-to-do-it video sequences. Epub3 as a dynamic web service (rather than downloaded to hand held device) seems like the way to go for video. Downloading large amounts of video to phone does not make sense. Streaming and discarding on the fly, as it comes from web pages, is the best way to handle video embedded inside epub3......it seems to me. My sever side "display epub3" as dynamic webpages already works. At this point I do have to unzip the epub3 on the server manually, to make it work. But PHP does support dynamic zip and unzip functions, so that manual step will likely go away eventually. The open source BIBI software already exists, that also displays epub on an apache web server. But BIBI hard codes the HTML header so it cannot be "embedded" inside an enclosing content management system without using an IFRAME, which has major drawbacks. My system spits out a collapsable DIV for the TOC and another DIV for the sectionX xhtml content. The content DIV may or may not also enclose the TOC. That sort of layout behavior is controlled by an XML config file. Here is the requested "ls -l" on the images directory, as it was several days ago, before I switched to Jutoh. -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 3801 Mar 12 15:53 adj-ribs1.jpg -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 10170 Mar 12 15:58 adj-ribs2.jpg -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 9094 Mar 12 15:57 adj-ribs3.jpg drwxrwxr-x 2 sandy sandy 4096 Mar 6 15:12 Aluminum -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 27941 Mar 6 15:11 boat-interior.jpg drwxrwxr-x 5 sandy sandy 4096 Mar 26 16:03 Boatpics -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 32313 Mar 6 15:11 bottom-angles.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 195318 Mar 6 15:11 bowline-hook.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 55460 Mar 6 15:11 frames.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 16290 Mar 6 15:11 front-seat-detail.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 147441 Mar 6 15:11 getting-there.jpg -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 85018 Mar 12 16:09 glued-on.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 84096 Mar 6 15:11 Gluing-down-locker-lids.jpg drwxrwxr-x 2 sandy sandy 4096 Mar 6 15:11 Grands -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 219226 Mar 6 15:11 hd-15-side-panel.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 143505 Mar 5 13:23 Honky-Dory.jpg -rw-rw-r-- 1 sandy sandy 2318 Mar 9 10:05 images.chp -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 143505 Mar 26 16:13 Jeremy-N-Kai.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 87520 Mar 5 11:54 larry-hedrick-grand-canyon.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 164071 Mar 6 15:11 moldings.jpg -rw-rw-r-- 1 sandy sandy 0 Mar 9 09:08 peepee.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 32564 Mar 6 15:11 plan-view.jpg -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 15594 Mar 12 16:09 Plascore-start.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 178593 Mar 6 15:11 plug-gusset.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 14144 Mar 6 15:11 rowers-seat-frame.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 9687 Mar 6 15:11 rowers-seat-photo.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 11263 Mar 6 15:11 scarfing-a.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 10902 Mar 6 15:11 scarfing-b.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 42701 Mar 6 15:11 Seat-fitting.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 19320 Mar 6 15:11 seat-gusset-angles.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 8216 Mar 6 15:11 seat-gusset.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 93435 Mar 6 15:11 Seat-parts.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 94795 Mar 6 15:11 Seat-positioning.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 18204 Mar 6 15:11 seat-rails.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 10702 Mar 6 15:11 seat-stile-blank.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 31609 Mar 6 15:11 side-angles.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 36846 Mar 6 15:11 side-panels-smaller.jpg -rwxrwxr-x 1 sandy sandy 1802 Mar 6 15:11 side-view.gif -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 10954 Mar 6 15:11 side-view.jpg -rwxr-xr-x 1 sandy sandy 21551 Mar 12 13:11 skill-table-saw.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 17534 Mar 6 15:11 station-1.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 16524 Mar 6 15:11 station-2.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 14929 Mar 6 15:11 station-3.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 14979 Mar 6 15:11 station-4.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 15528 Mar 6 15:11 station-5.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 16093 Mar 6 15:11 station-6.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 15853 Mar 6 15:11 station-7.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 18280 Mar 6 15:11 station-8.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 9584 Mar 6 15:11 stem2.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 6279 Mar 6 15:11 stem.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 66119 Mar 6 15:11 stitches.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 45637 Mar 6 15:11 Straightened2.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 50067 Mar 6 15:11 Straightened.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 96775 Mar 6 15:11 Straightening.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 11641 Mar 6 15:11 transom.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 65719 Mar 6 15:11 Transom-Twist.jpg -rwxrwxrwx 1 sandy sandy 202247 Mar 6 15:11 winch-hook1.jpg ........what ever it is (memory leaks?) that is causing sigil to be slow should be entirely fixable. It's important to remember what ever it is I'm doing, whether expected behavior on my part or not, is working fine in Jutoh. Yes I have a lot of images. My customers want them. Boat building is intimidating to beginners and they want to see illustrations of every step. Video will make things even more interesting. I now know how to edit video and have a good camera. I hope to start making video before the end of the summer. Last edited by pittendrigh; 03-28-2018 at 06:54 PM. |

That is nowhere near 80meg of images. It also has subdirectories in it and a txt file which means it is not from an epub created or edited by Sigil.
I am not seeing any slowdowns with images of the sizes shown here in xhtml files of the sizes you showed before. I am also not seeing a memory leak. I have let Sigil run for days with no signifcant growth in memory used. So there is something specific to your use of Sigil or your platform that is causing problems. We are trying to figure out what but need to know how many img tags you use on average in each xhtml file so that we can try to recreate the problem on our development machines to fix an issue if one exists. See my earlier reply about counting img tags in all if your xhtml files using a simple command line I supplied. Please simply report its output so that we can create something similar of our own. Either that or simply post a single chapter epub that illustrates the problem. We are trying to help but your rambling on about unrelated things is not helping anyone figure out what is going on. It is clear that nothing you have showed us imagewise was in an epub created by Sigil which makes this whole thread questionable. Last edited by KevinH; 03-28-2018 at 10:08 PM. |

"Websites don't work well for complex do-it-yourself online information. Epub is an order of magnitude more capable."
An interesting observation, considering that Epub code is a subset of HTML. What can 'HTML lite' do that the full product can't? |
