Look at Kobo standalone? (never want to connect to Kobo, or activate)

I plan to keep WiFi off unless I want to look for books (which will be rarely). It will probably sneak in the update at some point if I'm not careful, but at least now I know how to get around it.

Thanks again.

I would go with 3.19.5761 as I prefer a better reading experience than I do a game of chess.

Yeah, I went with the most recent software that would let me keep the tiles. But we all have something important to us.

You want the most recent software, I want the tiles, centros wants chess.

There is a version of chess that can be installed so you don't actually need the Kobo version of chess.

I've got the newest software on the other Touch but apparently I haven't used it enough to know what I'm missing. I don't think I'm quite as picky as you are about my "reading experience." As for chess, I don't even play it that much. I just liked the fact it was there when I had the Glo and was irritated that they took away, without announcement, with an upgrade. Didn't seem like the right way to go about it. I do know that my "new" Touch (older model) has a more sensitive touch screen, so this is probably the one I'll use.

I guess it's the tiles front-end that I like, but I also like the way the Menu system is set up. It just feels "cleaner.' But part of this might be that the "B" Touch (apparently) had advertising and the original model didn't. I didn't even know Kobos had advertising.

But I've already got chess. But seriously, I've got a lot to learn about the Kobos. It may be that I'll notice features in the newer software that will convert me to a "newer" upgrade on the other Touch. Maybe not. It may be one of these will be sold, but I'll probably hold on to both for now. I like the fact that I can choose the software that I want to use on Kobos – and part of this is just experimentation.

What do you mean by 'advertising'? If it shows anything other than the book cover on the sleep screen, there is a very easy way to change that.

The advertising on the front screen is controlled by the Affiliate specified in one of the configuration files.

I don't even know what I mean by advertising. I'm just going by the Kobo eReader Wikipedia article ...

Quote:
Variants

Three variants of the Kobo Touch were released: N905, N905B, and N905C. The first was the original Kobo Touch; the second was the model with advertisements; the third was the low-cost model introduced after the release of the Kobo Glo.[8]
(Italics mine.)

I don't know what it means. I just know my "B" release Kobo Touch looks "busier." But that's probably just the firmware release.

So what was different?

Ah, maybe that's it. I remember the Affiliate configuration because my Glo was originally purchased from Family Christian (Christian Family?) Book Store. And I've still got two or three promo books on my Kobo account that came from that affiliation – even though I wasn't the original buyer and the Glo is long gone.
