Missing Feature On All Kindles

Yep. So does my (one) eReader, the 8th Generation Kindle Basic. Of course I still get to see the ads because I'm too cheap to ransom the screen from them. Since it costs half what my refurbished Kindle cost, and since I don't know if this particular Kindle is going to make the "cut" in my (soon to happen) culling, I'm not sure I'll ever pay to "free the screen."

But if I did pay the ransom, would the 8th Generation Kindle Basic open directly to the book instead of a non-ad lock screen?

If you were in the book when the Kindle fell asleep, then yes. If you were on the home page, then it will open to the home page.

I live in Canada and my Kindle (PW) doesn't have ads on a lock screen. (And I don't have the "recommended reads" thing on the home screen either as I can toggle it off and on) they just have those screen images. But I only see them once in a while when I leave my kindle idle without shutting the cover. In Canada the Paperwhite normally costs $139.00 though, and I got it on a Black Friday sale in November for $99.

Okay, good to know. I figured that's the way it worked but I wasn't absolutely sure.

No, the Kindle 3 (maybe the earlier ones as well) had author portraits – and they're really ugly drawings (some of them almost creepy). Not that the Nook Simple Touch ones were much better, but you could opt for the scenery collection instead, or insert your own pictures.

I agree with this. Make it something the users can change, and sooner or later, they'll figure out a way around the special offers without paying the premium.

For as little as I see them, I'd still like to be able to customize the screen. I had some fun ones on my Pocketbook and my Nook.

I personally wouldn't use it often (if ever), but I would like to see it added. I can see the appeal to other people.

Or you could save the money and get a old Kindle Touch. Pressing the power button turns the ad off and goes right into the book. But it doesn't have sleep with cover option.

I've always liked the Kobo book cover option. My cover wakes my kindle so i rarely see it but you do usually get a flash of what it is and its nice to see the book cover.

When I had mine Jailbroken I used the screensaver plugin for this.

Not a deal breaker but a nice touch more than anything. Should be optional though like on Kobo.

So why is it so important to have custom images for sleep mode? Personally, I'm happy with the cover from the book I am currently reading. I know Kindles do do this, but Kobos do.

it's all about choice and preference. and some people do not use a cover on the kindle. they prefer sleeves. in this case, they will always see the sleep image when they pull out the kindle.

I've already got Kindle Touch(es) – and other Kindles (all of which work in the way you describe). But it's not quite the same as simply opening the cover for auto-on. Not a huge difference, but still kind of a cool feature.

Well, if they are going to use sleeves, then they get what Amazon gives them. It's their fault for using a sleeve instead of a case.
