Indeed. This is done automatically.

They need to be subsetted, but I wanted to keep the conversion process free from any tweaking of mine.

I've just re-tested Kovid Goyal's Calibre docx test file with the 04/20/2018 nightly build and got the same epub output.

The epub converter still has the following major issues:

Tables: one of the test tables (ITEM, NEEDED) didn't make it into the epub and a nested table was incorrectly converted.

Footnotes/Endnotes/Internal Links: footnotes, endnotes and internal links aren't supported.

Images: all images are stripped from the output.

Lists: standard list formats aren't supported.

That isn't what I gathered from the blog post at all. It seems like the author was mostly complaining that that EPUB output is severely lacking right now. And like Doitsu said, the EPUB output is still lacking a lot.

From what I gather from the LibreOffice 6.1 Changelog:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/6.1

there are only a few enhancements to outputting EPUBs with vertical writing.

Originally, yes. But scroll down to the "Update" section of the blog post, where he mentions that it was substantially improved in the master trunk.
