I am so tempted to write her a letter to explain to her that (1) people who read are generally fairly intelligent, and (2) people who read ebooks are not only fairly intelligent, but on the cutting edge of technology.

To insult our intelligence with statements like that does not tend to make us rush to be customers. We know full well that there are far less in the way of production costs for an ebook as for a pbook. Further, to price an ebook any higher than the comparable paper back book is idiotic.

The more idiotic publishers there are, the less likely ebooks will succeed in the marketplace. It's as simple as that.

Thanks, I missed that. $26 for an eBook is just outrageous.

Even worse, they raised the price ("recently up-priced") from whatever it was originally (I don't know what the original price was).

I'm glad I bought it for the original price, since it's a book I want to read. But it definitely looks like I won't be buying any more HarperCollins ebooks

i think i saw a reference in the thread on amazon to 9.99$ being the original price.

so the new "lower" price is still higher.

That is a dealer price, not a publisher price. Amazon is known to take a loss on some books to be able to advertise that new books are almost always $9.99 or some such price close to that.

Aacckk! The pirates are going to have field day if publishers start thinking this way.

Thanks for filling in the blank.

that may be true but i doubt the average kindle owner will make that distinction. we are talking about the prices to buy the book on amazon, if i've understood correctly.

The Pirates are always having a field day, even if e-books dropped to like 99 cents, there would still be extential pirating of books. I think the media industri as a whole must reconsider the way they distribute things.

Instead of charging per item, they need to start looking into membership systems. Let me pay $14.99 or $19.99 a month, and let me download all the movies, tv-series and music and e-books I want. I would love something like that. Today, I am spending a fortune on DVD's, CD's and boxed seasons of series. Not too mention e-books. And yeah, I do ocationaly happen to download something I really shouldnt....

As an aside, ebooks actually go through a different production process than print books and do cost a significant amount of money to produce.

I don't understand why the costs would be higher for an e-book than for a p-book.
Don't editors have digitalized versions of works that are intended for p-books release only, or do they have just original manuscripts and go through copying them by Benedictine monks?

Which probably would be cheaper.... Don't the Benedictines take a vow of poverty?
