I did a step-by-step on how to fix this kind of problem. I used Ember as the example but you can fix Bookerly in the same way if you have the time and inclination. The original thread is here, posts #2 and #9.

Someone also consolidated the details to the Wiki if you prefer to read it there.
For Bookerly, that unfortunately didn't help. Made the updates using FontForge and the italics are still bold.

I have the files renamed as:
Bookerly.ttf
Bookerly-b.ttf
Bookerly-i.ttf
Bookerly-z.ttf
in a folder at the root called fonts.
I sideload books using the KoboTouchExtended plugin for Calibre producing kepubs. Italics work fine with bookerly for me with kepubs. I can't comment on epubs, however. I haven't taken any other steps as described by others here.

Hmmm. The instructions worked for the OP so it's hard to troubleshoot yours without seeing the fonts myself. However, the first step is to double-check your filenames. I don't know where you got yours from. I extracted mine myself from a recent Kindle fw upgrade file. They are eink version 1.02 and the internal font name for all four files is Bookerly.

If yours are the same, the filenames loaded to the Kobo would need to be:
Bookerly-Regular.ttf (Bookerly.ttf is also OK I think)
Bookerly-Bold.ttf
Bookerly-Italic.ttf
Bookerly-BoldItalic.ttf
The shorthand filenames used by k9reeder, above, are also supposed to be supported but I've never tried this naming convention for any of my own fonts.

If it isn't a simple filenaming problem then I'd need to see your 4 files. You can't post them here but if you zip them up, store them somewhere online (e.g. Dropbox) and PM me a link I could take a closer look if you want.

Well, in the end I both followed your suggestions and renamed the files as k9reeder suggested:

Bookerly.ttf
Bookerly-b.ttf
Bookerly-i.ttf
Bookerly-z.ttf

Then I powered the Kobo off and back on. Now Bookerly seems to be working fine (the book I'm reading doesn't have lots of italics, so I was only able to look at the italics in the TOC).

In the end, I suspect powering the device off and on was what made it work. Which makes me wonder if doing that after following your advice would have fixed it as well.

Probably. I think the Kobo "does stuff" with the contents of the /fonts directory during boot-up.

Anyway, all's well that ends well

One thing about me (and i suspect many Kobo owners, at least on this board) is that the challenge of getting the thing to work is better than actually having the thing working.

Now that Bookerly is working properly, I wouldn't be surprised if I go back to Noto Serif. But it always bothered me that Bookerly didn't work.

If you follow the link you originally posted for Literata and look at the sample image of Literata text you will see Literata italic highlighted in red. As you can see, Literata italic has no slant.

Yes, I can second that claim. I only use about 10% of what I find, but it's a nice challenge.

As for fonts, I use Open Sans, Bookerly, and Kobo Tscsomething.

No, no. It's not that I don't believe there's a difference. Clearly when I compared the two the page I used had no italics, so they looked similar.

Now I'm just asking, for those that used Literata and Noto Serif, which of the two they preferred.

For now I'm using Bookerly, mainly because I got it to work. I'll probably wind up back at Noto Serif in the end.

What font is 'Kobo Tscsomething'?

It is one of the best Japanese types out there. By Shigenobu Fujita. He is one the best type designers out there.

Its latin glyphs is very good too, but no there is no italics.

I usually read with Malabar or Monotype's Baskerville eText. Malabar is really good.
