You can buy as many 1 year memberships as you want - each one you buy gives you an additional year of membership. You don't have to wait for your year to expire before you buy another one.

Frankly speaking I am avoiding all this stu.... siliness area of Mobileread. I believe it is a great shame we have it.
Appearance of this trend and flooders is the reason why I changed my signature from:

which I believe was more appropriate for this forum to the current one.

P.S. Sorry about it.

You don't have to be sorry about having a different opinion.

Frankly, some of us here appreciate the silliness while others - to include yourself - could care less. That's ok. I like it because it allows me a place to laugh at myself and at much of the pontificating that goes on here. I contain multitudes [of voices], as some dead white poet once wrote.

One reason the "Lounge" area is here is to contain the "Silliness" section, in addition to other areas that include "Friendly banter unrelated to e-books and mobile devices," as the Subject Header to the main thread states, which is named LOUNGE.

There is but one difference. One year ago the Lounge was at the same place where it is right now. However, it used to be a much nicer place for me at least

i am sorry you feel that way astra, but perhaps you could try starting some threads about the topics that interest you. after all, the lounge is what you make it too. i feel quite sure there is room for plenty of discussion of all sorts. what exactly is missing, in your opinion ?

well, first, what is "rubbish" to you is "much-needed catharsis" to another and "harmless, good-natured fun" to a third. and that list is not exhaustive.

second, i have the feeling that there is more of *everything* around here and that trend will probably continue, as ebooks enter new markets (the french forum seems to have more new members every day, and there seem to be a lot of new members from the UK as well now that sony is available there. have you not noticed how many new members there are ?). the whole site is growing and i think that is a good thing. if growth in general is what worries you, then you might be in for a difficult time.

third, i'm glad you don't feel anything is "missing" from the lounge, but i would again encourage you to participate with posts on subjects that interest YOU, because that is the place for them and i am sure you could have some interesting things to add.

one of the best things about this site is the community, in my opinion, and i am convinced that the activity in the lounge is vital to creating and developping that sense of community. it is, in a sense, a catalyst for site-wide participation, from greeting the new members to answering questions to pointing out ressources that the (exponentionally growing, i remind you) new members don't know about, even though those questions have been asked and answered before and the ressources are there for the world to see. if people are in a good mood because they were just laughing at a silly thread, they are much more likely to want to help out a new member who feels completely lost and overwhelmed, than if they are just stopping in for 30 seconds to download a few ebooks or check if there is a new firmware update.

sometimes even experienced members need help, and might get some from someone who stopped by for some silliness in the lounge. isn't that a good thing ?

It would be fun to do a few more things.

1. Stop adding posts made in the lounge to a total post count of a user.
2. Stop adding karma for posts in the lounge.
3. Subtract a number of posts made in the lounge from all current users
4. The last but not the least,
subtract karma received in the lounge from all the current users.

I am very curious how many flooders would stay over there

astra, i truly don't beleive that anyone stays here just to build up their post count or even (despite the beliefs of a certain minority) their karma points. those are not the essential elements of the experience here. nobody is winning a prize for the most posts or the highest karma. i am sorry if you feel they are an important indicator of status on the site and that some posts are less worthy than others of contributing to them and should not be included in the totals. we have already talked about new ways of indicating activity in specific aspects of the site, like the badges for technical assistance, ebook creation, etc. which will be implemented (soon, hopefully) as part of the site re-design, and which will be distinct from karma. perhaps that will make you worry less about the impact of lounge posts on other totals.

in the meantime, i'd personally appreciate it if you would not refer to members as "flooders" because if i understand the connotation (perhaps i don't...) it sounds rather derogatory. posting in the lounge doesn't make someone a spammer, if that is what you're implying (it sounds like it to me), and it also doesn't exclude making a lot of helpful posts elsewhere (inside AND outside of the lounge).

for example, i have a pretty high post count. a lot of those posts are in the lounge. but some of them are in the ebookwise forum, where i've tried to share the information that others shared with me when i first arrived, and some of them are in the Gen3 forum, and quite a few of them are helping organise meetups (which help spread the word about ebooks in general, and i hope you'll agree that that is good for everyone), and a lot of them are in the french forum, and those posts are all quite serious and often technical (go take a look, if you'd like some proof. google translate is your friend, and we welcome anyone in the french forum). and guess what ? even some of the posts and discussions in the lounge are quite serious.

just because i'm silly sometimes doesn't mean i'm useless. and believe me, if it weren't for the silliness, i wouldn't spend nearly so much time here, and then poor hadrien would have to help all the french n00bs all alone. and that would be pretty hard work, because as i mentioned, there are more and more of them.

Speaking for myself (and I am unanimous in that ), I could care less about karma or about post counts.

I'm not here for that. I do like the fact that my "work" here is often appreciated (eg. book assembly, humor, support for MobileRead, being able to help individuals when I have the knowledge to assist, etc.)

I'm here to contribute to this great community, where opinions differ and friendships are made, but where respect is paramount, as was your post.

How an individual contributes, of course, is up to that individual.

I like it that we can have a serious fun on this site and also separate the two into distinct groups and sometimes have only fun and sometimes be only serious.

Now, before this gets too serious, I'm going to have to go. This is, after all, THE LOUNGE!!
