I love Kindles. But I'd never consider another Fire tablet, and their Fire TV and Fire Stick has never even been a consideration for us. We like Prime, and the benefits that come with it, but their video streaming is sub-par IMO.
We have a fast connection and a good router. All of our devices connect and stream Netflix and other streaming apps with no issues. Prime video, on the other hand, stops, locked up, the app closes for no reason, and so on. This happens on all of our iDevices and with the smart tv. It is reliable in its unreliability. We use a Roku for those apps that our tv doesn't have, Acorn TV for example. We are buying less from Amazon than in years past, for many reasons. I've never had an issue with a purchase that wasn't taken care of. But their shipping issues have sent up red flags for me, and I don't buy from them automatically anymore. |

I do appreciate that Amazon generally has a lot of older movies where Netflix seems to focus on newer stuff. For me, the two services compliment each other. |

Same here. I've never felt pressured to exclusively commit to one streaming service--or device, for that matter.
I have both Rokus and FireTV devices, so I don't have to worry about these petty licensing squabbles. But in this instance, Youtube's not really a game-changer. I almost never use it. As far as UIs go, I think all video streaming services stink. And their algorithms are all horrible at putting content I enjoy in front of my eyes. I have to search externally and then see which services provide what I find. |

Right now, I only use Netflix, Amazon and YouTube (there's a lot more on there than you would figure). I suppose if we ever cut cable I'd branch out a little more. |

It's the reverse for me, actually. Roku has the Spectrum cable TV app and the FireTV doesn't (allows me to watch cable on TVs without a set top box and their accompanying monthly fees). But the FireTV integrates better with Echo/Alexa. In fact, several apps for the FireTV have been updated to make better use of voice control/Alexa.

That was my solution. I had a (actually "have a," my son is using it now) Chromecast but what wanted to use Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Video, Crackle (whatever) without having to worry about this stupidity. It's worked out well for us.

I cut my cable cord a year ago because I rarely watch TV and was tired of monthly charges. I bought a HD antenna and a Fire TV box, but only recently set up the Fire TV when I got prime. I still rarely watch TV and really don't want to subscribe to any of the monthly streaming services like Netflix. Between what I get from the antenna and Prime offerings I get enough to watch without any monthly fees. As for YouTube I don't care if its on my Fire TV, it's fine using my computer for that.

I use an AppleTV, Tivo, iPad and iMac for my various video sources.
Both Google and Amazon have interesting dynamics in this little battle. Amazon's issue is that people don't want a bunch of different devices, they want one and content is king on that device. If you can't get youTube, then young people don't want it. Google's issue is that Amazon is the go to place for new devices, so if they aren't on Amazon, where will people buy their devices? I do think that eventually, we will see some sort of front end that hides the complexity of all the different video sources. Apple is trying to be that with their video app, but so far, I haven't been impressed with that app. The various audio front ends (Siri and Alexi with several more coming out) try to be that as well, but I think that interface is limited. |
