I was distracted by the inflated "page-turn life" and hadn't read the fine print that it involved "turning 1 page per second continuously right after a full charge." A LiIon cell will only degrade to about 50% over 6 months or so. My iPod lasts for 6 or 8 weeks when it's off. My computer battery lasts for months if it's off. Our new product, a wireless music streaming device, was designed to last 4-6 months when turned "off". It all depends on the quiescent power use when it's "off" because none of these electronic appliances are truly off (as I'm sure you know). I guess the eBook is using more current keeping DRAM refreshed or something (I don't remember the exact components in a PRS-500 right now -- it's been a year since I looked at a teardown so I'm guessing here). A flash-based system designed correctly need not draw much power at all quiescently. But basically, you're right, two weeks' life is understandable and not too bad. I just wish they had told me that instead of encouraging me to blow my warranty for nothing. |

When you take a photo of your device, I'd like to suggest you do so using legal content and not Darknet content. Now there is proof that you've download a Harry Potter book and J.K Rowling could now come after you.

My PRS-500 broke earlier, mysteriously (I posted earlier). Since then, I got a PRS-505. It's really nice. Got it with a new Sony credit card so I'll get $150 off. Now I'm going to send my PRS-500 in (with cracked corner) for the $100 rebate. I'll let you all know if it goes through!

If I do the poll and say 'No' then it's a given that I will break my screen soon after so I can't do the poll.

I will state that if I was so inclined to read the crappy works of J.K Rowling, I would most assuredly steal them. Fortunately for myself, I have no such inclination.

I was just thinking, is it possible the 'mysterious' breaks are being caused by changes in temperature/humidity? With a very rigid shell (albeit I'm sure being designed with some internal expansion taken into consideration) and a thin glass substrate this could be a possibility. The aluminum (aluminium for the other side of the pond

If that's the case, then the problem is very easily preventable.
All you'd need to do is open your reader, install some kind of heater elements along the edges on all 4 sides, then close the reader. Oh, and you'd need some kind of a thermal probe to regulate the heaters so your reader is kept at constant 22 degrees Celsius. That way you could also use it to warm your hands in the winter! ![]() |

Well, unless you have a lightwedge or a 700, if you put it where the sun doesn't shine (in your anorak, that is), then you'd have a little bit of trouble reading it.
