I am thinking the OP meant a cheap ereader not the cheapest ereader. There are no cheap ereaders.
Now my two cents, the kindles are on sale this week. I would say if the kids will use them, get new ones. Also, how many kids and will they have their own or share one? |

Do you know ereaders are muuuuuch more fragile than tablets?
I don't think eink readers with no plastic substrate in their screens are a good tool for kids |

If you look right now, Woot has another sale going on refurbished ereaders and tablets. Go to WOOT.COM and click on COMPUTERS. Scroll down to TABLETS. 7th gen Kindle for $25. I bought 2 of those and they are great! There is also a 4th gen Kindle ($20) and I had one of those until I traded it in for a Voyage. They work fab as well. Also, Kindle Touch is there!

Are the kids teenagers or little kids? The fragility of eink screens should be a factor in your decision, if they're small or not careful. You may be far better off with a cheap low-end tablet with parental lockdown features.

I recently bought the refurbished Kindle Basic Generation 8 while on sale for $39.99 and it was in new condition without a scratch on it. I suspect that a customer did not like the no screen lighting because it seems to be in perfect condition. Reading reviews I note that too many do not read the description and downgrade the basic unit for not having a illuminated screen. IMO the buyers need to learn to read. For kids the non-illuminated screen makes sense as when they are sent to bed you want them to sleep!
