Ah yes, should be ... But then, it's not an OS's responsibility to play any kind of files (though we could have a long and heated discussion about this subject). But, any decent Windows audio player software will gladly play .ogg -- VLC among them, or, my favorite, foobar2000 (both open source and free, and certainly more comfortable to use for playback than Audacity).

Robert,

Missed (or forgot) the reference to VLC in your initial post - thanks for re-posting!

Another one I should have thought of. I guess I was fixated on the conversion problem. VLC is one of my must-have programs, as is Audacity, but I use VLC as a player and Audacity for editing audio. All's well, though. Thanks to Granny, you're well-armed.-)

Last spring I think it was, but I've seen intimations that muddy the freeness of it. I can't recall the details but I do recall telling myself that they had more convincing to do. If MP3 can be shown to be a completely open format, then I'll reconsider using it.

Hm, I think it was me who had missed your previous reference to VLC!?

Anyway, your thanks are always welcome, thank you!

But who would do that? Patents have run out (which the Fraunhofer Society had never aggressively pursued), there's no one to gain by anybody's use of mp3, so, I doubt that there'll be someone to make a huge convincing effort. But, it's mostly an academic question, .ogg is fine, and if for someone it isn't, it's they who'd have to convince you.

Not all of us use a PC.

Your tablet played the OGGs automatically after we got the torrent thing worked out, didn't it? It's my impression that tablets will more reliably play them than Windows PCs will.

Once it loaded them yes. That did take a few minutes. That was because of the number of files.

True! But this belonged to a discussion that went back to Alyssa's statement "it expanded into separate ogg files (one for each chapter), a format I'm not familiar with, and which is unrecognized by Windows Media Player on my laptop," and arjaybe's reply "I chose OGG because it's an open standard. All operating systems should be able to play it without any hinderance or encumbrance" -- therefore the Windows talk. BTW, my Colorfly "Pocket HiFi C3" audio player supports WAV, APE, FLAC, MP3, and WMA -- but not OGG.
