My question was does anybody know which firmware version à PW bought now in France would ship with.
Try posting here.. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/fo...ysprune=&f=160

That should put you in the France Forums. Also you can contact Amazon Customer Service...again the France Forum folks might help you find that number.

Why is it that Amazon treats other countries (other than the US) as third world countries?

If you can't jail break it, you can always use the "30 days, no questions asked, return" policy.
The way I look at it, if it's a jailbreak or don't keep, then don't bother in the first place because its not what you want.

Thanks for the answers concerning the firmware version. I'll consider using the 30 days return possibility, and I'll ask around before that some more.

That is a _very_ good point.
The only thing going for a jailbroken kindle in my case is that, using Linux, it would be very difficult if not impossible for me to remove DRM from epub books, which is what all other devices use. So my work flow would be buy kindle books, remove DRM, convert to epub then transfer to new device. A jailbroken kindle would offer what I'm missing (nested collections!) while simplifying book acquisition.

But I'm veering way off topic!

Why is it any more difficult to remove the DRM from an epub with Linux? I believe that there are quite a few people on here who do just that. In any case...if you ask at Alf's they can help you with that.

Removing the DRM from epubs requires to have installed Adobe Digital Editions, which doesn't exist for Linux. Many people seem to be able to install it fine with wine but I didn't succeed. I guess I could find the relevant information to be able to do it but that would require more time than I'm willing to put into this.

Just run Windows in a VM and it's trivial.

Wrong.
Not even jail broken Kindles support nested collections.
At least not on any firmware more recent than 5.3.something.

Ah, I have my facts wrong then. Thanks for pointing this out, this will make my decision much easier.

Can you get a copy of Windows to install in a VM? Don't get XP or Vista.
