BetterRed - That may be what I need to do. I will wait until certain programs that I'm running are completed.
From post #9: "I may try to install the non-Portable version and see if it completes the process." |

BetterRed - thank you.
I feel that I should apologize for monopolizing so much of the Board's time. I appreciate everyone's input and time given to my problem. |

I don't have the N edition for sure, but I routinely install calibre portable at a W7 machine (no idea if 32 or 64, sure not the N edition) and no problem at all. I always install it in a pendrive, I'm going to try to install it in my hard disk, and see if there is any problem.

Terisa de morgan - If it installs on your pendrive, I have little doubt that it will successfully load on a hard disk. I did try both as well. The issue I am having concerns the 3.x Portable version. Thank you / ciao

My pendrive went from 2 to 3 smoothly, but I don't remember if the first installation was at W10 or W7. I've downloaded 2.85.1, however, installed it, started it, and later I've installed 3.10 with zero problems.

**NEWS**
Successfully installed calibre-3.9.0.msi (Not the Portable app) to a hard disk. So, therefore, it seems likely that the code for the Portable (Or, the compiler of the Portable app code) changed from 2.x to 3.x. It is probably only observable on legacy hardware systems. I am favoring the likelihood that the program which compiles the program changed during the time period of going from v2.85 to v3.0. That info should be available to Mr. Kovid Goyal. There are, however, problems running the v3.9 program I just installed. The Welcome Wizard (Library folder set-up) ran and the UI did pop up properly the first time. However when trying to re-launch the program, I briefly see the splash image and Calibre shows up in the Windows Task Manager for a few seconds. But just as the splash image pops to the interface window the program (and process) disappears from the screen and Task Manager. There are no system event error logs. I can launch the book-viewer.exe independently w/o a problem, but the main Calibre UI window will try to load for a couple of seconds and then the process vanishes. Like I said earlier, either the coding or the compiler must have changed in a way that makes the overall installation or running of the program incompatible with my hardware. I don't think the OS is at fault. Thanks to all who spent time thinking about this. |

Have you tried running Calibre (full) in Safe-mode?

JSWolf - Thanks for the suggestion.
I didn't mention that I did the full install in a virtualized environment since it helps to keep the system and registry clean. So, Safe Mode is not available to those programs that I've installed in this manner. However, since the Portable is an exe file, I am able to try to install it as if it were a full setup via virtualization, but it failed, whereas the msi file did at least complete and run (once). |

**New Testing Info**
This may be of interest to Mr. Kovid Goyal or other software programmers here: I experimented after a full (not Portable) install. 1) Run calibre.exe as admin. 2a) Program pops a wizard window to set location for a Calibre Library folder. Folder must be empty. 2b) Main Calibre user interface window pops up normally. 3a) Exit program. 3b) Run calibre.exe as admin. 4) Splash screen image displays text >>starting Calibre >> initializing user interface >> program window border outline appears, then program hangs >> use Windows Task Manager to End Process and shut down Calibre. 5) Two files are created in the new Calibre Library folder: metadata.db and metadata_db_prefs_backup.json. 6) I rename (or could delete) the metadata.db file to hide from program. 7a) Run calibre.exe as admin. 7b) Main Calibre user interface window pops up normally. A new metadata.db file is created in the Library folder - this new file will remain unmodified by me. 8) Viewing Task Manager, the calibre.exe process maintains a 45-50% cpu load which seems very high as I haven't initiated any program functions. Besides the process load, nothing abnormal seems to be happening. 8) Exit program. 9) Repeat Run & Exit routine again w/o issues except the process load which seems high. 10) Try to Add an epub to the library. Program hangs and must use Task Manager to End Process. 11) Launch ebook-viewer.exe. Opens OK. 12) Try to open epub. Popup Error window details > Worker appears to have hung. 13a) If ebook-viewer is shut down, and attempt to open is repeated, the same error message appears. 13b) If ebook-viewer is kept open after the error, subsequent attempts to open the same or other books are successful w/o error messages. After shutting ebook-viewer down and re-starting, there is always an error on the first attempt to open a book, then subsequent attempts are successful. 14) Done - for now. |

Just curious as to why you run calibre as an admin?

PeterT - Maybe my reasoning is flawed, but I run as an admin in order to eliminate security rights and permissions over files and folders as possible issues to problems.

Just a question, did you say you were running it in a virtual machine?

Terisa de morgan - The short answer is yes, but I only "virtualize" selected software programs (of my choice), not the OS. Basically a sandbox. Anti-virus programs, the OS, other mission critical software needing functionality at boot time is excluded. I have used this method for maybe 20 years.

If it worked with 2.X and it doesn't work now, well, I cannot help much more as I've not had any problem in the step (and I even tested the beta).
