I'd say the most "hackable" of the current crop of readers is the iLiad, which has a developer SDK, though it's also the most expensive (probably because it also has the largest screen). Note-taking is also possible on the iLiad, using the stylus, though the notes are not converted to text on the iLiad itself, requiring export and conversion with other software on a PC, etc. (One iLiad user has reported using Evernote for this purpose.) Downsides to the iLiad besides the high price include the slow boot time and lack of a "sleep mode," and shorter battery life compared to other readers (probably because of the Wacom screen). As mentioned above, the iLiad supports wireless 802 protocol (I've forgotten which version).
I don't know how thoroughly Amazon has been able to lock down the Kindle, but given that they're covering the cell network charge, I don't think it would be trivial to try to get free access through the Kindle, and I'm sure Amazon has a TOS that would terminate your access if they catch you at it (and they might be able to come after you to recover charges, as well). We try to stay on the right side of the law here at MobileRead, so if your intent is to try to cheat Amazon's TOS by hacking to make use of their cell networking in ways other than those supported by Amazon, it would probably be best not to discuss that here. |
