Yes. It also runs FBReader, but the Sugar interface gets in the way of using it as a general Linux device (unless you are already familiar with Linux). A version of the device for adults would sell well, but does not seem likely. The screen technology is available commercially though. See Why I favor Mary Lou’s OLPC screen tech over E Ink—at least for MY purposes and What’s Happening at Pixel Qi - Mary Lou Jepsen’s Blog.

I was kind of in the same boat. I really liked my Dell Axim, just wanted a bigger screen. I did search around for months looking at different UMPC, mini pcs....everything. Pocket pcs do not come any bigger than a 4 inch screen. I wish the eee pc had a swivel screen and control pad on the screen. The only one that came close was the model from japan a Kohjinsha but battery life still not great on it.
In the end I got the HTC Advantage (Athena). It runs windows mobile, which my Axim was running too, though the Axim had an earlier version. But it was a familiar platform for me. I use mobipocket, I prefer to use the one program for reading books as it is just easier and I have found it the best for my needs. But I am not locked into it if I need to change in future. I love the 5 inch screen. It does a lot of other stuff and of cause is more expensive than a dedicated ebook device. I wish dedicated ebook readers manufacturers would get it in their head that e-ink isn't the be all and end all. They should release some models with lcd backlit especially now there is transflective lcd screens that are supposed to be good in direct sunlight. |

I cant agree more with bjkel, eInk is not the be all and end all of ebook readers. Well, not unless it gets several orders of magnitude better!
DDHarriman thanks for your two cents worth. I started the whole thing at tablet pc's, but the weight/heat/batterylife issues were just a bit too much for me still. But, I'm keeping an open mind. They are v.tasty. Thanks again to all who've posted their opinions. I think I'll be checking out the eBookwise in the very near future (gotta find a way to buy a new one in Australia...otherwise, ebay here I come). And in the long term, I think I'll go drool some more over at the UMPCportal..... ![]() |

Obviously some as-yet-unknown usage of the word 'ultimate'.

This looks interesting, and it's super cheap (depending on what the final retail price is). It's not very high resolution, but the screen flips around to tablet form which would make it nice for reading.

ebookwise 1150
I have to agree with the others that suggested the ebookwise 1150, I have one and I love mine! Its a reasonable price and has worked great for the 6 months or so that I have had it!

No one ever mentions the REB1200. It is, in my opinion, far superior to the GEB1150. Yes, it's heavier but it has a MUCH better screen. I own the 1150 and the 1200 (and a Sony 505) and would never go back to the 1150 after using the 1200. The 1150 screen is dingier, greenish and much duller and is much harder to read IMHO. I also enjoyed the larger screen immensely.
I'll be selling the 1200 one of these days on Ebay when I get a chance to list it. I only purchased the Sony when the new light wedge came out for the reader. The light wedge leave a lot to be desired and it's expensive but I use it everyday. Otherwise, I would stick with the 1200 due to its backlighting. Say what you want about e-ink, the ease of reading in the dark without an obtrusive reading light is my first priority. |

The 1200 is a great eBook reader but it has poor battery life and very heavy and bulky. It is best used at home but the 1150 is better when traveling (mobileread). The eBookwise is 1150 still be sold while the 1200 is not. I understand the Cybook gen 1 was a nice device too. Used units are often scarce or hard to get repaired or get parts.

The 1100/1150 are the best models from the point of view of price and sturdiness (i.e. ability to carry it around). My 1200 rarely leaves the house as it's way too bulky (plus it has that problem with the page turn button -- which is flimsy by design)

Well, I have a 1200 too. I prefer to use it at home for reading PDFs (they look outstanding when in landscape mode) but for rough usage you can't beat the 1100/1150.
