The iPad 4 is supported with the latest iOS. A lot of Android devices get left behind and don't get the latest Android.

iPad mini is fine, but for $200 or even $250 a new one is out of the question in Canada at $530! If a used one go for at least an iPad mini 2, one of the one's with Retina display. Skip the first gen model. Galaxy Tab A isn't a horrible choice though. Honestly I'd just recommend you get your Kobo Aura One replaced and working. I love mine and find it a much better reading experience than my iPad Mini 2 or Windows Tablet. |

If you go for the tablet option, look at the resolution. I personally wouldn't ever buy a 8" tablet with a resolution below 1980x1200 anymore (a 16:9 tablet I would never buy for reading, too long and too narrow).
Asus has a very nice tablet: Asus Zenpad S8.0 (Z580C) (4:3, has Android 6) There's also the Lenovo Tab 4 Plus 8 (16:10, has Android 7) Not sure what the prices are in Canada, here in the Netherlands, they are around the 200 euro mark. |

I have a Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70F. While it's an older model, it has a very nice 1920x1200 10.1" screen. Lenovo Canada is still offering the Tab 3 10 which has the same screen. The processor is a little slower than mine, but for reading I doubt you'd ever notice.

The A10-70 isn't their fancy high end "Yoga" tablet. This is a not very sexy, but well built, generic Android device. I like to use it in 2 column mode with the Kindle Android app. It renders 2 pages at a time and is very much like reading a book in that regard. Graphics are very good. It's my go to device whenever I need to look at maps, photos, and charts when I read. There is no need, in my mind, to spend the money on an iPad for just ebook reading and surfing the internet. Take the extra money an iPad would cost and treat yourself to some books you wouldn't normally buy because of their cost. Last edited by GlenBarrington; 09-28-2017 at 07:54 PM. |

We have some people here who will tell you that there is only ONE BRAND TO RULE THEM ALL, but that's just silly. ETA: it also gets regular updates and is running the latest Android version. Last edited by khalleron; 10-03-2017 at 07:45 PM. |

I saw some reviews of chineses tablets on youtube and they have good hardware specifications. There are brands like Teclast and Voyo that have great models with beautiful screens with a low price. At least it's interesting for me cuz here in Brazil big brands are REALLY expensive.
Here there are reviews of the best ones from china http://www.bestchinatablets.com |

Before buying a tablet, take a look at the apps. Find a reading app you want to use. This means looking at reading apps for iOS and Android. Then once you decide, you can then decide which tablet you want.
