I don't see where heat would have much to do with it especially in a very air conditioned room. To recreate the entire scenario, you need to be in that restaurant. It could have been a glitch with either the phone or the kindle or one other idea. How were you connecting your phone to be a hotspot? It could be like others suggested a restriction of bandwidth. Some businesses do that. |

OK, with logged temperature on my web server up at 107F, I think we can count out overheating (at least on its own).
To connect the phone to the hotspot, I was just running the built-in android network. Again, this was a restaurant so no blocking going on. I agree that I need to be at the restaurant to fully debug but I am too busy to head back there on a whim. The next meeting is next month. Last edited by Richy_T; 08-10-2017 at 04:53 PM. |

The time and date KUAL menu entry sets date and time from NTP servers. The main searchbar command entry is manual. Take the device off of the charger, turn it off, let it cool down (inside, where it takes a rather long time to cool down). See if your symptoms change. As far as interference goes: https://www.howtogeek.com/197268/how...rating-system/ see lead picture. Scroll to near the end of the article to see an example of using the iwlist command. (which is installed on your Kindle) - - - - Just because your meeting was public does not mean that someone did not forget to turn off the Wifi suppression gear after the last non-public meeting. Noising about a little with the iwlist command would probably have shown you what was going on. (If you want 'stand alone' operation - install kTerm) Last edited by knc1; 08-10-2017 at 05:02 PM. |

Let's see, you are using the kindle in ways not originally intended. You are trying to use it in places that you don't know the restrictions on the bandwidth. Rather than using the free wifi, you attempted to use your phone in some unknown manner as a hotspot. Knowing how you tried to turn the phone into a hotspot might help us troubleshoot. Take the darn things to breakfast at McDonalds and test there. |

Well, it's not a corporate restaurant, just a little Puerto-Rican restaurant in the south side of downtown Nashville.
The free wifi was not an option. There was *nothing* in the scanning list. I couldn't see any hotspots, free or otherwise, secure or otherwise (though I and others could from their phones). I couldn't even download a book. The hotspot on Android is not an "unknown manner", it is a well known and understood part of the OS (it is disabled by the carrier on some phones but not mine) and one that I have used many times and tested specifically with the Kindle before departing my home. At this point, I'm just going to wait and see for next month. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen again but we will see. I will be sure to have my laptop with me and will allocate enough time that I can do some more in-depth debugging. One thing that stands out is that it seemed like there was a non-alphanumeric character in one of the available hotspot's names. Seems unlikely though. I'll give it a try anyway. (nope, not that) knc1, I'll definitely give those a try. I'll probably accumulate more tools on the kindle as I go but it's pretty clean right now. Last edited by Richy_T; 08-10-2017 at 05:30 PM. |

Are you 100% positive you had the hotspot set to a create 2.4Ghz hotspot? Kindle's don't have support for 5Ghz hotspots. My phone at least likes to default to 5Ghz. Those can't be see by the Kindle.
My Kindle has had trouble connecting to 2.4Ghz networks in overcrowded locates but never has it not seen the access point. |

Salamanderjuice: Good point. Definitely 2.4. I just checked. Just checked Google street view and no large antennas in the immediate vicinity. Last edited by Richy_T; 08-10-2017 at 06:03 PM. |

Interesting. It seems that if I connect it to my hotspot, turn off the hotspot and wait a while then turn the hotspot back on again, the kindle does not automatically reconnect to the wifi until I press buttons (I still see the flash on the screen from eips running). I'll have to see if there's more detailed information on this process on this site (no doubt there's a command to unsuspend the wifi). I haven't been able to reproduce the "no wifi at all" issue so far. I think it may have been a one-off but will try again next time I'm in Nashville.

There is such a command.
I would have to do the same as you, search for it on the forum or look for it on the Kindle. |

It will probably be a good thing anyway as I should be able to suspend the wifi immediately after my update and make the battery last longer. Eventually I want to suspend the whole kindle too. The battery currently lasts three days just as it is (screensaver disabled). If I can get it out to two weeks, I'll be happy. When I put it in a frame, I'm planning on adding some extra hidden battery capacity anyway.

Well, just to update, I was back there today and no issues with the wifi so it seems it was just a random event.
