Just Book, who gives a damn about the format, this is the only place I would even bother to differentiate, and even then only when comparing electronic to paper.

Paper book or physical book when in real life, or p(aper)book if used on the internet. When I say "Book", I mean the electronic form.

Book, unless I'm specially referring to it as distinct from an ebook, in which case paper book.

Just like I don't commonly refer to a book as being a hardback book or a paperback book, unless the physical format is relevant. |

I almost made the mistake of not reading the OP. Like others I use just book when the distinction is not important, but when distinguishing between paper versus electronic I sometimes use "pbook", sometimes "paper book" (which I was able to find options for) but I have also been known to say that I have a book in "paperback" or "hardback" when merely identifying the fact that I am talking about a paper rather than electronic edition.

I don't know if I ever consciously heard the term "pbook" before seeing this thread.

I just say "book" unless I'm talking specifically about an e-book or audio book. If I'm posting something here and need to distinguish, I think I probably say "physical book" or "printed book." |

I realise the title wasn't clear enough so I've asked for an addition to it to make the question clearer.

I only added plain 'book' for those (ahem, stubborn ) people who want to insist on just saying book even when needing to distinguish from an ebook. For example, if such a person only reads ebooks then they might say, 'I don't read books anymore'. I hope that makes it clear how silly it would be to use simply 'book' to distinguish from 'ebook'.This was mentioned in the OP, but now hopefully the title will make this clearer too. |

I suspect that if you wanted to draw any conclusion from your poll, you'll need to re-do in a new thread. Although I have changed the thread title for you.

Thanks pdurrant. It's tempting but except for 'book' the options would probably still have the same or almost the same votes since it's multiple choice, and even with the question clearer a good amount of people still may want to vote for 'book' anyway (the title was changed when there were 55 total votes with 'book' at 15 votes, so any above that we'll know those people knew the clearer question and still chose that option). I also wonder if a new poll might be a bit skewed because some who already voted on this poll might not bother to re-vote on a new one. So because of all that I might be inclined to let this one stand, but if the consensus is we should start over again then I will. If anyone has an opinion on whether I should let this poll stand or redo it, speak now!

The first four entries are incorrect. They should be spelled pBook and pBook stands for all of those definitions meaning there should only be ONE entry for pBook.

Can this poll be fixed or does it need scrapping and a new poll in place? Last edited by JSWolf; 07-04-2017 at 02:30 PM. |

I use pBook when I mean specifically not an eBook. The problem here is I'd have to vote multiple times for the same thing.

I think that there is no point in re-doing the poll, but for future reference it is always a good idea to have a "none of the above" choice just in case you forget a popular option. Without that some people will just pick the closest match or not vote at all.

All right, it's probably best just to let this poll stand as is. It has given some interesting results so far. I didn't expect the spread to be quite so wide with 10 out of 12 options getting two or more votes, and no option has more than 50% so we really do use a variety of terms when distinguishing non-ebooks. I wonder if in the future we'll coalesce firmly around one term like we have with 'ebook' (we almost all use the same word regardless of capitalisation, space or dash).

The top five at the moment seem to be- 1) 'Paper Book' 2) 'Pbook' (regardless of what the 'p' stands for) 3) 'Book' (though some might have voted for this in error) 4) 'Pbook' (specifically short for 'paper book') 5) 'Dead Tree Book' Even a very diverse top five. Going in I definitely was not expecting 'paper book' to be the leader, and by a good bit too. |

You can't have pBook ranked more than once as it means all of the definitions you've posted. It should be one entry.
