It's simples! At least on my Paperwhite 2, to know where you are in the book:
Touch the top of the screen, so that all the icons show: at the bottom of the screen you'll see "loc 2000 of 4000" or something like that. With a finger, stroke the screen bottom upwards and a bar will appear (your current page is saved in the background and shown again as a smaller box which you can rifle through). The bar graphically indicates how far through the book you are. Just tap on the background to return to normal. Hope this helps. |

BookCat the modern UI doesn't work like that. You have an older device. If you click on the top of the screen it is the page view options that pop up on the bottom of the screen.
Besides the OP wanted to know progress in the chapter not in the book. There are multiple ways to judge progress in the book as a whole. |

If you transfer ePub books to your Kobo, the only page numbering system available is the Adobe system. I also mentioned in my original post that I like the KePub screen count for chapters better than the Kindle "minutes left in chapter" that I have on my Voyage. |

I'm the kind of person who hangs onto technology until it's no longer satisfactory. I bought the Paperwhite 2 in 2014 (I think) to replace a very old, slow, Sony PRS 505!! |

jhowell: thanks for clearing that up. I prefer my version even though it seems harder to regulate how many pages you 'flip through' at a time.

But - It depends on the firmware version you are running. If you have a PW-1, then the most recent is 5.6.1.1 (which you seem to be describing). If you have a PW-2 or newer device, you could be running the most recent firmware version - 5.8.9.0.2 There have been a lot of changes to the user interface over that time period. |

Because BookCat did. It helps to read all of the posts.

I don't own a PW 1 or 2 anymore. I sold one and gave the other to my Father. BookCat described a UI that doesn't match the UI as I currently know it from my PW 3 and Voyage, which made me think that her PW 2 did not get the same page flip update that the modern Kindles enjoy. Are you asserting that is incorrect and she merely has to update her firmware? Or are you speculating that if she did update her firmware she would have those features? You do realize that page flip firmware update came out more than a year ago? She would have to keep her Kindle offline in all of that time in order to not have it if it were available. Could be true, some posters do that but I find it unlikely. |

The user interface is determined by the firmware not by the hardware. Her's fits the condition of: "If you have a PW-2 or newer, you could be running the most current firmware. (>>but you are not, so you can fix it if you wish<<). I left out the qualifying phrase because I was running low on 'snarky' that day. Since she did not provide the firmware version or Kindle model, I had to write that carefully to exclude the version(s) that can not provide the page flip feature that other people describe as: "modern kindles" Yes, it is entirely possible - I have a KT3 (8th generation Kindle Basic) which is still running the firmware it was originally shipped with on day -1 (I received it the day before the advertised release (day 0) date). That includes shopping in the Amazon store, having books delivered, syncing the device with my account ... And yes, I have used the dump messages command (;dm) to dump and read the messages to learn why that is happening. I know why, but do not want to publicize Lab126's mistake. ![]() I mentioned the model in my first post and if you look under my avatar you'll see the ereaders I have - a Sony 505 (hardly used now) and a Paperwhite 2. The Paperwhite 2 is in permanent aeroplane mode, because I don't like wi-fi, it gives me a headache, and have other means of getting the internet to my computer (home plugs). I contacted Amazon about this when I purchased the Paperwhite TWO, and they registered it by phone. I transfer all books, including those bought from Amazon via USB. I do lose some function, like collections and vocabulary builder etc. So it has the original firmware, but I'm now confused about what this has to do with the UI. From what others have described, I'd prefer to leave it as it is. The OP has objected to this off-topic discussion, so maybe we should go back to helping him. Thanks haydnfan for informing knc1 of what I actually said. ![]() |
