Yes, I'm aware of that, but when asking for display quality I was exclusively considering the reading experience. I never had an Ipad or Surface, but from youtube videos I've seen it seems that the display quality of the Ipad is better than that of the Surface from a reading standpoint. Yes, The Surface is Windows based with all the advantages that means, a full fledged PC, but for that I have a Windows notebook. I'm just looking for a textbook reading device. If the Surface display is as good as the Ipad's of course I'd go for the Surface.

Go or the iPad. It's a good size and it's a lot easier to hold for reading.

Yes, the Surface looks bulkier, plus it's 12.3" compared to Ipad's 12.9". Does iOS offer apps for reading all unprotected formats (djvu, pdf, mobi, epub, azw3)?

There are iOS apps for djvu, PDF, Mobi, ePub, & KF8 (azw3). In fact the best PDF app (Goodreader) is iOS only.

Is there a single app that will handle all of these formats or just separate apps for each? Any recommended app for the other formats (non PDF)? Thanks

There is no single app. But that should not be an issue.

PocketBook can read all except MOBI and a few you didn't mention like comicbook, CHM. and FB2. The app matches the standalone eBook reader.

The Android PocketBook app is claimed to read MOBI in the Google Play Store. I use Pocketbook as my main reader app and the few MOBI format books I have tried have all worked ok.

I can't comment on any Apple version.

Good to know. They don't list it for the Apple version but I have never actually tried it. It is actually a pretty good app, and it provides downloads as well.

If you are considering Apple and Microsoft, you should also look into Samsung. They make some large tablets with nice hardware. Android in general and additionally Samsung Android are too annoying for me, but no more than anything from Apple or Microsoft.

Ipad 3:4 aspect ratio is better for PDF than Android 10:16.

Forget. a Surface. I have one and an iPad and for eBook reading I'd use the iPad.

Thanks everyone for the replies. After reading your feedback and also from my own research, it seems that the Ipad is the way to go if not considering an eink dedicated reader like the Sony. Also I tested epub/mobi/azw3 to PDF conversion with Epubor and it does a great job, so GoodReader would be the best choice. For DjVu format, there are many apps, I found "DjVu Reader Pro", "KyBook" and "PocketBook" all with good reviews.
