It is refurbished but it comes with the same warranty as a new one. I've bought a few certified refurbished Kindles over the years for myself and my neighbors and I haven't been able to tell any of them from new, except for the packaging, of course. All are still in use by my friends and neighbors.

The Paperwhite has a front light which makes this a lot nicer than the Basic Kindle. It also has a 300 dpi screen. It's the latest model Paperwhite.

Thanks!
What do you say about ONYX Boox C67ML Carta and Pocketbook Touch Lux 3 comparing to the Paperwhite? Eventually my mom need the function of the light, and they seem to be equal to the Paperwhite.

Given that both are using a Carta screen at the same resolution of 1024x758, I would go with the Onyx if I was choosing between the two. The Paperwhite has a Carta screen with a higher resolution. The biggest functional difference is that the Onyx and Pocketbook both use ePub where the Paperwhite uses Mobi, KF8, & KFX.

Neither of these devices satisfies your primary requirement of costing under US$100, however.
