You might well be right, though I was hoping for an eReader that I could purchase within the next two weeks.

I really wish a local store carried these Kobo eReaders, as I'd really like to give them a test run. I've called around, but no one nearby seems to carry them.

The basic Kindle (not the Paperwhite) is a cheap option. I think it comes with a bold font built in which may be good enough for you (I think it's called Ember), but the font choices are a lot more limited than a Kobo. Also you can hack a Kobo to have white text on a black background, which might help you.

You could also look on shopgoodwill (USA only) if you don't mind used. But no Kobo's there. An old Nook Simple Touch might suit you.

It's quite possible a basic 6" reader will serve him just fine.

It would help to know the country we're making recommendations for. That way folks might be able to recommend where to get something too. Some brands are more easily accessible in some countries.

If unlit is your only real requirement, just go with a basic no frills ereader like the Basic Kindle or find $20 and go with the cheapest Kobo.
You can't go wrong with them and with the kindle you won't have to worry about a light in your eyes.
No, they aren't as great but if you can see ok but just have light sensitivity, they should work well for kindle.

Kindles are wonderful if you don't need heavy fonts. If you do need heavier fonts, go with the Kobo because at this time, there is no guarantee you could jailbreak your new kindle.

I'm in the US.

I really do like what I'm seeing in the Kobo line. A larger, heavier font would be easier for me to see. That said, the price is defiantly an issue. The Kobo H20 with tax is $200, which is twice my budget.

From the videos on YouTube I've been seeing, it looks like the basic Kindle has a tendency to flash black when turning a page. That'd be irritating if true. Honestly, I wish the Paperwhite had the ability to turn off the screen light...

Hm.

Ok, one more question! I saw that amazon sells both the Kobo H2O and the older KOBO Glo HD for about the same price. If I were to squirrel away my money, would it be better to wait for the Kobo H20 2nd edition, buy the the first edition or go for the Glo HD?

Yeah, unfortunately that pretty much means no Kobo's in B&M stores to go look at. It was nice when places like Best Buy carried them.

All eInk devices flash when they refresh the screen. Some devices allow you to set the interval of "page" turns between flashes.

Maybe go and look at one? IIRC with it at 1% it's like a very faint glow only noticeable when in a completely black/dark room, otherwise regular room light drowns it out. Others will know more about this as I don't have a PW (although I can lay hands on one). Not sure if the current Nook, which is the other B&M option in the US) can have the light turned all the way off or not.

You don't pay tax buying a Kobo. Buy one from Chapters and with the exchange rate you get it cheaper even though shipping is charged.

I think you will have a problem with the Paperwhite. The fonts are too light and the one that's not is not a good font to read with.

It's not a good font to read with FOR YOU. If you're talking about Ember Bold, it's my preferred font.

I'm currently debating which model I can actually afford, as my budget is under $100 and Kobo tend to be expensive. Their readers look brilliant, just a little too pricy. Fingers crossed a good deal pops up soon.
You don't say where you are, so we don't know how much $100 actually is. It probably means you are in the US. if so, the Kobo Touch 2 should have been in your price range, but Kobo seem to have recently stopped selling it. That was a 6" device with 800*600 resolution. Good, but not great. You might be able to find one. I think the only device listed at the moment under $US100 is the basic Kindle.

Most people prefer reading with a serif font. But besides that, it only gives one font choice with increased weight. I do think that with eye problem(s), a Kindle might not be the Reader of choice. You've read my reasons why previously in this thread.

You are correct. I looked up prices for Kobos and the cheapest is $119.

You can get a Kobo Aura H2O from Japan for $128.98 from eBay in the US.
