At some airports you have to take ereaders, tablets and laptop out. If you leave them in the bag, they ask you to take them out and put bag separately again, and ereadres on the tray separately as well.

I've been to many airports and I've never been told to take out my Reader. I've only had to take out my laptop and/or tablet. I'm talking airports both in and out of the US.

In the last two years I was asked to remove the ereaders at airports in Europe, India, Russia and China.

I've traveled in Europe (including recently) and I've not been asked/told to remove my Reader.

Could very well be. I'd be interested in which countries required the Reader to be taken out of the bag.

I always have to take my reader out of the bag, and my iPhone 6 Plus as well - although the smaller iPhone 5 is allowed to stay in the bag. The whole procedure seems to be designed to inconvenience people and nothing else.

Do you have to take your Reader out at Heathrow Airport? All the times I've been there, I've never taken my Reader out of my bag and my H2O is larger than an iPhone 6 Plus. My phone sometimes goes in the tray depending where I have it when I am at security. But my Reader has never ever been out of my bagat any airport. And that includes airports in the UK.

Actually that looks like a Cracked screen. I do not think this was caused by the xray machine itself, or we would have more reports.

I suspect that whether or not you have to take an ereader out of the bag and place it on the tray is entirely at the discretion of whoever is doing the security check. Thus, different people might have different experiences at the very same airport on the very same day.

A few years back, I had a stubby screwdriver confiscated from me while pre-clearing American customs at Toronto airport. I had it with me to screw some wheels back onto a homemade dolly once I got to my destination which was Japan. I was just transiting through the US.

I was told "No tools are allowed." Had it been a full sized screwdriver, I might have understood. I could probably have done more harm with a chopstick than my stubby little screwdriver. But I surrendered it nevertheless.

However, on my return flight, I made sure to have another stubby screwdriver with me. No problems clearing security in either Japan or when transiting through the US airport back to Toronto.

Some security personnel are just a little more zealous/anal/incompetent/self important than others.

However, given that some people are clearly forced to put their ereaders into the tray and that the static buildup could be a potential, if very infrequent, problem, it would be nice to know if there were anything one could do to protect one's ereader while complying with such a request/demand. For example, would putting the ereader in some kind of clear vinyl bag perhaps help to protect it?

I usually do not have to take my e-reader out of my carry-on, but about a year ago while traveling domestically in the US, I had to remove all electronics for one flight - but not for the return flight.

I have not been asked to remove anything but the computer for many other flights, including flights to Hawaii, Germany and Israel.

It may be different due to a particular concern at the time, or if may be due to a particular TSA supervisor; as for me I will comply as needed, keep my Aura off of the belt (i.e. in a bin) and hope for the best.

I didn't see any curved or diagonal lines that would indicate a cracked screen. The lines all seem to be straight which is more controller (i.e. electronics) related rather than screen related. The only one that could be a crack was the screen with the face and that appeared to be content rather than screen crack.

In doing a few internet searches, doesn't seem like this is a very common occurrence at all. Like winning a lottery or getting struck by lightning, it is a possibility, but rather remote.

Although I would opt to keep my ereader in my carry on bag, I wouldn't be overly worried about placing it on a tray if asked.

Perhaps the OP can provide some more details on what happened:

Was the ereader in a bag or on a tray?
What airport did this happen in?
Was the ereader powered on at the time? In sleep mode? Or powered off?
Was the ereader in a case?
If it was in a case/cover, was it in a Kobo case or a third party case/cover?

Netherlands (Schiphol), Great Brittain (Heathrow) and US (Los Angeles). But it could be it doesn't depend on the country, but rather the security person.
