Thank you for a quick response! I'll stop using the transfer to device option and use the e-mail one instead!

For anyone interested about details I got a (even though somewhat vague) response from Amazon customer support confirming that the best alternative is to use Send to Kindle.

You do know you'll end up with obsolete Mobi and you won't be able to read with a side load font if that's your preference.

That’s correct. I never use email address method; I treat that as ‘legacy’ feature. With Send To Kindle, you can work with larger files than are sometimes allowed as email attachments, and cannot control Title Author, or select devices (or just store in cloud).

Send To Kindle Sharing option is also added to iOS/Android when you install the respective Kindle app, should you come across a .mobi file or browser article there.

Hi all,

Here is the procedure I use to enable both Whispersync and page numbers when transferring from Calibre to Kindle and iPhone. It is cumbersome, but works for me. I use this if I know I will be away from home without my Kindle, so I can read on my iPhone.

1. Convert original Calibre book file to Epub in Calibre.
2. Use Hyphenate This Calibre plugin on the Epub if you want Kindle and iPhone to use soft hyphens.
3. Copy this new file to the desktop.
4. Change file extension from .epub to .txt
5. Emai the txt file to your Kindle email address. You will get a awz3 file appear in a folder on your Kindle.
6. Connect Kindle to computer by USB.
7. In Calibre, convert the original book file to AZW3 if it is not that already. Use Calibre Send to Kindle to transfer to Kindle via USB
8. Still with the kindle connected by USB, use Explorer to find the book folder on the kindle drive. It must be the book transferred by the Kindle and USB. In the folder will be an .apnx file. Copy it to the book folder on the kindle from the kindle e mail transfer.
9. Change the long name of this transferred .apex file to match that of the USB transferred folder exactly. It must still have the apnx extension.

Disconnect the Kindle, and then you have Whispersync and page numbers on the kindle in the Amazon Cloud version. I then delete from the Kindle the Calibre Send to Kindle book.

Then download the book from the Amazon Cloud to your iPhone. It will have covers and Whispersync will work but you will NOT have page numbers on the iPhone (or iPad)

Hope this helps.

You can send a "mobi" that has both old mobi and AZW3 embedded in it (this is kindlegen's default, and IIRC Calibre can do it too). If you do a send-to-email with that, Amazon will then send the subset that works on your reader (so, azw3 on all Kindles still receiving firmware updates). Sideloaded fonts and everything will then work fine.

Yeah I know the Kindle uses the Mobi format but it's that or PDF to chose from. I keep an original with all the versions in my Calibre library and that's the main reason why I want that to be the master.

In an ideal world the Calibre library and Kindle Cloud would be mapped 1:1, including bundles (as collections) etc. but that doesn't seem reasonable to wish for.

Yeah, that's a great feature! I actually often buy epub versions on my iOS device, download it, convert it with The Ebook Converter and send it to the Kindle. Then when I'm back at my computer I import the downloaded epub to the Calibre library. A bit of a hassel but it works.

Wow, thanks for your input. Sadly that's way too much work for my taste.

The actual whispersync isn't my biggest issue since when I start to read a book I read it in the Kindle app or on the Kindle itself and if the book comes from Kindle Cloud (like I'm looking for) it syncs automatically.

The main issue for me is probably more related to my personality and desire to have a better overview. It bugs my mind to have some books in Calibre, some books on my iPad, some books on the Kindle and some in Kindle Cloud. Just imagine adding Apple Books to this equation. :I
