Yes.
The TBR list that I count is those books I intend to read at some point. It includes books I have bought (or gotten for free from somewhere) and books that I intend to acquire in the very near future (paid or from the library). I don't include sequels that I own where I haven't read the first book yet though. I also don't include MANY of the free books I got when I first got my Kindle. I went a little overboard and grabbed anything remotely interesting but upon further review I am unlikely to read many of them so I don't count most of them. I do keep a list of all the books I own though just in case I do feel like something different at some point. |

I can't even *hope* to finish everything I own. I'm lazy. Instead of buying/downloading a Sherlock Holmes book, I just buy the entire Arthur Conan Doyle collection at Delphi. Same for 56 other writers. There's no way I'm going to read all of that. I also bought every book I ever wanted, thought I wanted, and thought I might somehow want, maybe, someday.
I have everything I want/need, and only add new releases I find interesting, moving them to the top of my reading list if they seem *really* interesting. |

Listed.
Especially since I've been trying to stem off purchasing books. If it's available via overdrive at one of my libraries --- I won't purchase it. |

Realistically, my TBR just consists of:
![]() * And usually costs less per hit than what I'd have to pay in transit fare to reach an area where I could readily purchase said drugs. Or attend therapy, for that matter. |

Same here. My TBR used to be only the books that I purchased. However, I was buying way more books than I could read. It would take years (decades?) to read all of the books that I have purchased and not read. I have shifted my habits such that now I keep wishlists on Overdrive for my library and at Amazon. I also create empty records in calibre for books that I especially want to read and use the Overdrive plugin to identify sources for borrowing/purchasing. I try to avoid buying a book unless I am going to read it in the immediate future.

I view wish list and to be read list as different list. To be read is the list of books that I have purchased and are in my to be read list (a book a day, and I should be able to knock it out in a year or so

My TBR list comprises books in one of the following two mutually exclusive categories:
Some books in both categories are tagged "In Queue". These are books I'll read next, whether I own them or not, when one or more of the following occur(s): I finish my current book(s), I crest the library hold list, the publisher releases them, or the author-or-publisher sends them. I used to count my TBR as those books marked as unread in Calibre. But I acquired a lot of books that I may never read, mostly through anthologies or collected works, e.g. I downloaded the set of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom books and having read the first it's unlikely I'll bother to read the rest.
So then I created a Calibre tag "real_tbr" but I didn't maintain it. Plus there's wishlists and I keep buying new books. And re-reads. These days I've pretty much thrown out the idea of TBR. I feel a lot more relaxed. |

Personally, I'm using Calibre as my personal library. I acquire books by buying them using Kobo coupons, by getting them from Delphi, or Feedbooks. Sometimes I have a bout, and add a lot of books (10+) at once. That stopped at around 2014-2015, because as said, I now have everything I wanted/wished/could have wished, and I only add new releases or recommendations.
When I want to read something, I just browse the personal library/bookstore, and pick something. |

The crucial element for me was internalizing, at long last, the reality that I'll never read all the books I'd like to read.
So, that said, my TBR is only books I own, but it's not all the unread books I own, hence it's a somewhat nebulous figure. I'm not going to force myself to read something just because I bought it. At the same time, all those always-to-be-unread books do serve as an object lesson about buying ahead. When I think about it, my ebook buying wasn't a carryover from the pbook days, when it was necessary to have books on hand. Instead, it was a glutton's response to perceived bargains. (Kobo, I'm looking at you. And to a lesser extent, Amazon's daily deals.) Which of course have turned into not at all a bargain, at least for the never-will-read. At long last, I'm finally over it. I do maintain a short wishlist which I cull frequently and limit strictly. And here, the object lesson for once was not my own behavior, but that of some of my Goodreads friends, some of whose wishlists are in the several thousands. Really, what's the point? Lists that long are entirely unrealistic and utterly useless. If I don't get around to reading/buying a book on my wishlist in a reasonable amount of time, I take it as a sign I'll never be in the mood for it and strike it. There are a few exceptions for pricey books waiting on a price drop, but even then, eventually many of them stale. These days, I mostly shop in my own library or the actual virtual library. I try to restrict myself only to purchases that are exploding bargains and that I'll read in the near-term. I'm being pretty successful, knock wood. |
