I hoped the update might fix the second one. But if I get it working again, I am tempted to copy your approach.

Those are usually indications of the database on the device being corrupt. Signing out of the Kobo account, generates a new database and reloads the books.

But, it could also be a sign the clock was wrong. If the order of books on the home screen or library lists didn't change, then I'd go with this.

This means do a factory reset and then do an update to the current firmware. Then once all that's working, go the the KSM08 thread and find out about the version you need for the current firmware and also get the latest Koreader.

No it won't cause a problem if you do it properly. You need to do a factory reset and then use the PC for the setup to put the desired version of the firmware on it.

That's what I was trying to avoid, but I guess I will have to do it then. Thank you for your advice.
