When you have been sideloading books, have you been properly EJECTING the device before you unplug it from the computer? Not doing that is probably the #1 culprit in corrupting the database. You might get away with not doing so for a while, but eventually it usually catches up with people if they aren't properly ejecting.

And it's not all that surprising that you're back on the old homescreen. It is currently in a test phase and random as to whether you get the new or old homescreen when you update firmware or sign out of your account.

In addition, signing in and out proves to be a pain because it turns out almost all of the books that I had loaded via syncing are *no* longer on the device. Only 5 titles of about 100 or 200 (don't know exactly how many) were present.
I'll have to download them all manually again -- which I'm not going to do (wouldn't even know how to find them manually in the long list).
And this might prove to be a huge pain if, for instance, I decide I want to read one of my books when I'm in any place where I don't have easily accessible wifi. Since it's not on the device.
So it seems to be an older version of the FW after all. But it does still give that serial number.

Guess I'll have to give the "download all" command (which will also download a few I no longer need on there). Sigh.
All our earlier problems where cause by the corrupt database. Fixing that by signing out and back in, fixed the books not appearing on the device problem. The only other way to fix it is to restore a recent backup of the database. If you didn't have one, then the sign out is what you have to do.

The fact that you now have the old home screen is unrelated to the firmware version (except that you have to be on a particular version to be able to see it). Kobo are testing the change and about 20% of users should get it. During the first sync after the upgrade, Kobo decides if you are one of the "lucky" people. An entry is set in the database to indicate which home screen you will see. There are some functions that are different between whether you have the old or new homescreen. I didn't think the light controls was one of them, but maybe it is. It is possible the difference is in the affiliate. If you changed this, it will have reverted to the whatever is associated with your account when you signed out

Only five books being downloaded is expected. This is what happens whenever you setup the device over WiFi. If you do the setup using the Kobo desktop application, it will download all of them. If you don't want to use "Download all" on the device, you might find it easier to use desktop app to select the books to download. But, using the "Purchased" filter on the device will show all the books from Kobo and you can go through that to download the ones you want. There is a way to just show the non-downloaded books, but at the moment, that won't really add anything to what you need to do.

I had the same problem, with the same fix (sign out, sign back in) on the latest software. This is kinda unacceptable.

Yes, it shouldn't happen. So next time it does, have a think about what went on recently so you can report the bug to Kobo so they can fix it.

I've never had a corrupt database. I make sure to eject the H2O either via Calibre of the OS eject. I make sure it's properly ejected before unplugging the USB cable. I also have a backup of the database thanks to Kobo Utilities. So if somehow I didn't properly eject, I'd be able to restore the last good database.

I had it once, because I unplugged the wrong cable from my PC (it happened to be the one with the Kobo attached, while Calibre was writing and not the the one I had used before for my GPS system...) It was after that that I looked into those Kobo Utilities and started using it...

The only things I would lose if I had to restore the database would be maybe the reading position, any highlights, and the collections for any books added. But eventually the collections would be fixed next time I connected the H2O to Calibre. So that's really a non-issue.
