Jon, when someone explicitly doesn't want to spend a lot of money, recommending a premium or a super-premium reader probably isn't that helpful.

I personally think Brian nailed it in the second post: easy access to an existing Nook library, waterproof, and mid-range price said the GlowLight to me, also. But the OP wanted a Kindle. It's over.

Just as a general observation, and I've said this before, I wish more posters could think outside their own preferences and prejudices to consider what best meets a poster's stated requirements. Also generally speaking, unless a poster brings it up, most of the more esoteric considerations don't apply. There's no reason to overthink a recommendation. These days, any reader is most likely to be good enough.

I did some patching on my first Kobo. Maybe also on my second. I never really felt there was much benefit. I liked having the smaller bottom margin but that's a very minor thing to me. The Kobo's font features are sort of nice when they work but they often don't work with side loaded books and in recent years I rarely even try them anymore.

To me the advantage of the Kobo is it's small size and light weight. Mine are Kobo Auras and I like them. My Kindles are more reliable and the features I really care about work well. Also I get the Kindles with 3G and that means I can access Wikipedia when I'm away from Wifi. I like looking up new concepts and new contexts for old concepts as I read and I miss not being able to do that if I take the Kobo with me.

Recently I'm reading more on my phone when I'm away from Wifi so all of this becomes a bit less important.

The fact is that if I could have only one ereader I'd prefer a Kindle but I'd be happy enough if it was a Kobo. However I'm very glad I'm not limited to one ereader.

OP here. Just to clarify, I ended up with the Kindle paperwhite because I needed to make a quick decision as I was leaving on a cruise and wanted to get something delivered before I left. I had never heard of a kobo and went with the brand I knew, and that Amazon would delivered in 2 days for free.

yes, I have a library on Nook that I may still access but will do on my Ipad at home.

End result, I LOVED the paperwhite, read 3 books on my cruise, all while at the pool or beach. Absolutely no glare whatsoever. Getting wet is not a concern. I keep it in my bag and sit away from the water.

Thank you for all of the comments.

Now that you're home from the cruise, take some time to learn about Calibre and Apprentice Alf. You don't need to lose your Nook content and there's no reason you can't read it on your Paperwhite with a small amount of fiddling.

Why does anybody care about water resistance when reading at the beach? I can see it being important if you read a lot in the bathtub, but at the beach you aren't going to be right next to the water when you read. Or at least the beach umbrellas are seldom close to the waterline. And even if your device is waterproof, if this is a sea/ocean and not a lake, you still have to deal with the salt in the water. I certainly wouldn't want that in my electronics.

I've read a few books on the beach and to me, the problem isn't water, the major danger is sand. Since most ebook readers don't come with Gorilla Glass or equivalent, like phones and tablets do, you are in more danger of scratching the screen from a stray grain of sand IMO. Especially if you are at a very nice beach with very fine sand, it just gets everywhere and is hard to avoid.

The only times I can envision an ereader of mine getting wet are major downpours of rain where my bag soaks through.

I never understood that one either, water resistance is of much more use in other situations. Like on the table outside your backyard, where somebody just knocked over that glass of water/soda/beer/wine/other fluid. Or that camping table where it suddenly started to pour and you're rushing to get everything under cover. Or as you already said, that downpour which soaks your bag/jacket through.

And swimming pools! While at the beach, the chairs are generally further away from the water, at swimming pools, they're often right next to it. With a waterproof/water resistant reader you don't need to take care nobody splashes your reader by accident.

As I said above, "in which case a waterproof/dustproof/sandproof reader would be optimal."

The screen may be vulnerable if you're not careful getting any sand off the screen, but it would be worse to get your reader full of sand via a port. The H2O has the added benefit of being able to just wash any sand off, instead of trying to brush it off and risking the screen surface.

I found the rubber flap covering the port to be a real nuisance on my H2O. Very difficult to open when I wanted to plug in the USB cable (although that may have been down to the design of the case I was using).

It probably depends on the individual's thumbnails as well as the case design. My case is well out of the way of the flap, and I can very readily flip the flap open with a thumbnail.
