Fellow MR member author and occasional Locus Award listee Stephen Goldin (ISFDB) is offering 50% off much of his catalogue of mostly SF and writing advice, and also some free-with-coupon shorts.

ETA: Robert Appleton (ISFDB), who got his start writing steampunk for Harlequin's Carina Press imprint and has offered some freebie KDP shorts in the past, offers some free-with-coupon short stories and 50% off other works.

Although the sale blurb on the Smashwords website says it's good through March 11, the coupons are no longer working for me, at least on the handful of books I've just tried them on. Has anyone else gotten the coupons to work in the last few hours? (It's 7 am US Pacific time right now, or 3 pm GMT, and so yes, it's still March 11 even at GMT.)

I'm glad I got most of the ones I wanted during the last couple of days - there were just three or four more I was going to take a look at. Still, I hate it when stores don't honor the posted terms of their sales. If they aren't planning on honoring what they post, better (IMO) not to post at all...

Oh yeah, and the coupons still show up on the individual book pages - they just don't work...sigh!

UPDATE: The coupons still seem to work if you just put the book in your cart at full price, and then add the coupon by hand in the coupon box, and hit apply. What seems to be not working right now is the "auto-apply" of the coupon straight from the individual book listing. (Hope this makes sense - it's hard to describe...) So I guess my little tizzy fit was misplaced...

Well, good to know it's still working (sort of) and you've figured out how to get the discounts to still apply. My internet has been down, and I was thinking of getting extra stuff today.

A few more sale/freebies from established authors:

Frances Pauli (ISFDB) sf/fantasy, some with romantic elements. 50% off and some coupon freebies.

Neil S. Plakcy (Wikipedia), Lambda Literary Award-nominated for one of his gay mystery series (not in the sale). 50% off some of his indie m/m cozy mysteries (also has some steamier offerings which may have NSFW covers).

One last thing if you think you can fit it in before the sale ends (unless it goes to Pacific Time, which right now it seems like it might).

Award-winning Danish author & cartoonist Steen Langstrup (Wikipedia DK) turns out to offer two freebies, translated from Danish into English. Metro is a free-to-download short story from a 2009 anthology, while Russian Dope appears to be a translation of his 1998 novel Dope, and is free-with-coupon. He also offers 50% off two WWII-era Nordic Noir crime thrillers for a cost of $1 each, which are also translated from previously-published Danish works from 2003 and 2006, Stikker and Panzer, to be precise (lots of quoted newspaper praise in the blurbs).

I picked them up because I like historical mysteries and also stuff from cultures which produce dragon boats and eh, why not? Maybe the author will be encouraged to put up more of his backlist stuff and I might even get a try at reading the originals one day.

They finally fixed the coupon issue! Just as I was done shopping, though.

In any case, it turns out that there are four freebies lurking at Crossroad Press if you dig through the 30-odd pages of their listings.

Free to download: Heart of Dragon, paranormal fantasy short by founder David Niall Wilson.

Free with coupon: Tales from the Crossroad Volume I a sampler with short stories and chapter excerpts; 'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky crop-duster novelette by Wilson whose category says horror; Flesh Wielder by Ronald Kelly, a horror short.
