Do NOT trust Google Translate....it is rarely correct for anything more than a single word. It is a known joke among foreign language teachers about how easy it is to tell when their students use Google...its always wrong...

Do you think they speak English in 'Yoruba country'? I don't!
A few years ago, a senior Google Manager said analogous: Our customers are like lettuce heads - only their number counts. (Who was that?: I have lost the note.) However: Tabili sound already something like table ... ![]() I tried with Arabic: inline toc is المحتويات (looks as possibly correct). The simple explanation will be: Kovid will not have adopted any jungle dialect correctly. I would not have expected him to. The Yoruba thing was just meant to be fun. |

Well I know they do - speak and write in English!
Most of your so-called "Yoruba country" is in Nigeria, the rest is in Benin and Togo. The official language of of Nigeria is English, most Nigerians can speak and write in it, I know this is true because I been there a couple of times! Nigerians writers have won and been nominated for the Man Booker Prize - arguably the most prestigious award for creative writing in English there is. Some of them probably spoke Yoruba too. Here is a picture of People outside some shops in Lagos. It's not some upper middle class shopping mall, look at the signage. Likely as not some of those people speak Yoruba, and well as being able to read and write in English. Most sub-Saharan Africans can speak at least two languages, and often three or four, one of which will usually be that of their former colonial rulers, French, English, Portuguese etc - because that is the official language, and what's used at schools and colleges etc. BR |

As a younger man I was frequently for some years in Yoruba country, also in Ghana & Togo. It was not too nice there. Lagos, the big harbor in Nigeria, was and I believe still is, one of the most obscenity removed unpleasant places of the entire world - in every aspect!
Here I must correct myself: Yes, they speak English. It's one of the four main languages (in Nigeria). When I brought Yoruba into play I didn't thought so much about, especially not to start a sideshow. Quote:

I know English is not your native language, @chaot, but please try as hard as you can to avoid using obscenities. Mobileread strives to be a family-friendly site, so there's no good place for f-bombs around here.
