In my opinion, the Cybook Gen3 is also worth mentioning. Its PDF support isn't as good as the Sony Readers (no reflow) or the Iliad (smaller screen), but as of the latest firmware update, it's usable. The Cybook has the huge advantage of being dead simple to use (it's rather minimalistic with no excess features except for MP3 support) and rather lightweight.

HTML shouldn't be an issue with any device, to my knowledge it's well supported by all of them. RTF may require some conversion, but is supported, as I've heard, in a pretty barebones fashion on the Sony Reader.

For further reference, see the ereader comparison matrix on the wiki (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix) and this thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28456 which seems to have mostly similar requirements.

There is also a rumor going around that the kindle is coming out/working on a textbook version of the current kindle (it will be a little larger than the current kindle in order to support textbooks), but this will also be helpful for students (I'm not sure if it will support what you need one for because it is just a rumor at the moment and can't find specs).
