After you get your new Kindle (is it a fire?) and begin the process of retiring the old one, one thing you could try is to uninstall and reinstall CC. I haven't suggested that to this point because doing so will reinitialize the CC library. Normally this isn't a problem because one can restore the library from a backup, but in your case the settings problem prevents you from making the backup in the first place.
I can easily uninstall and reinstall the app. I have a dedicated library in Calibre with the books I put on my Kindle to read. I quickly learned that after having to reset my Kindle once and not knowing what books were on the device.

I am getting ready for work and do not have time this morning. But I will do this when I get home around 11 pm central time (-6 GMT). Just tell me if there is a specific way you want me to uninstall the app.

Nothing special required. Just uninstall it in the same old way then reinstall it in the same old way. (Sorry about that. For some reason I have recently been thinking about Wellington.)

I deleted the app and reinstalled it. I see the same as before. Do I need to restart the device after deleting CC and before reinstalling?

Rebooting shouldn't be necessary. According to Amazon the process is:
Quote:
To remove an app from your device:
From Home, tap Apps.
From the upper right corner of the screen, tap Device to show only apps that are downloaded to your device.
When you locate the app you want to remove, press and hold the app until a checkmark appears. Tap Remove and then tap From Device.

Tip: If you remove a paid app from your device, you can download it again from the Cloud or from the Amazon Appstore on your device. To do so, click the menu button at the bottom right side of the Amazon Appstore and go to My Apps. To install an app you've previously purchased, go to the Cloud tab and click the Download button next to it. The app will then be downloaded and installed on your device.
You should now have CC version 5.2.3.1. Do you?

Yes that is the version I have. So the problem has to be with the Kindle and not the app.

It sure seems that way.

Given that your new Fire is arriving soon, I suggest you wait. Once you have the new device, and assuming that CC works, then I would do a full reset on the existing Fire. If that doesn't make it work again then I am out of ideas.

It will be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Just depends on who is delivering my mail. Some of the people refuse to deliver packages to my house because of my dogs (which are inside when I am not at home).

I will let you know but after everything I think it is the Kindle and not the app. Who knows what happened and what caused the problems.

Thank you again for all your help. I greatly appreciate it.
