My Calibre Library is 25GB my only thumb drive is 8GB. There's also syncing with Dropbox so it needs to stay on the desktop. I do two manual syncs one to Dropbox and one to another external drive.

If you don't think it will work. I'll just have to let it collect dust and sneak once or twice every few months. My options are limited unfortunately.
@Blossom - as I said in my original post - you need to be aware of this ==> ...

Using calibre in a network environment is not supported. Yet many people (such as JSWolf) do it successfully, sometimes for years. But, there often comes a day when it stops working. Here is a recent example ==>> Calibre database access issues. You'll find a quite a few similar threads where users report that calibre on a network suddenly stops working.

If you go ahead with using a shared drive just make sure you have a fallback strategy should it go belly up.

If your libraries were on a 64GB thumb, you could sync them from your laptop to a shared drive on the desktop, and from there to Dropbox. That should work fine and it would avoid the 'calibre on a network' issues.

BTW On April 11 2017 extended support for Windows Vista comes to an end. That means no more security updates.

Okay thank you so much. Vista support may come to an end but I'm not going to throw my computer out because of it. I'd have to let hubby use my laptop.

We have $0 income right now.

It's a mystery with BIOS. BIOS is so old that I can set it to hard drive or CD Drive. Hard Drive it acts as a disc drive will cause a boot error unless I have a disc in like Ubuntu in.

My understanding is that Vista and Windows update puts files on the largest drive if it has more free space. My hard drive is 650 but full of everything and passport has tons of free space so Vista commandeered it years ago. I gave up trying to eject it. My other drive is newer and it's a My Book it ejects just fine but it's huge and it's FireWire.

As far as I can tell, StickMount and equivalents require rooting the device. No way we can even hint at doing something like that. Trying to make "standard" networking work in CC for most people is bad enough.

That said, you are correct. If:
  • a device is rooted
  • StickMount works on that device
  • the user allows StickMount to mount the OTG device
then CC's cloud connection should be able to see the library.
