Coating circuit boards with some kind of material to make them waterproof and more rugged has been done since 1970s because it is better and cheaper. It also makes repair more difficult to impossible.

Or when you waiting for a couple of friends at a restaurant and some nitwit decides to spill a large glass of water all over you and your ereader. That was the only time I tested the waterproofing on my H2O.
