Once you import, you can go to Book Settings and if you choose page direction to Right to Left it disables panel view. Thus you create 'manga' books. So that part at least I got correct.

I created one as 'manga' and when I opened it for the first time it did bring up the help screen that described fast page flip. However the behavior is not there. I assume this is another case where some 'secret sauce' is needed, and that only happens if you publish it to KDP.

I had metadata language set to French, so it also downloaded a French dictionary. Not very helpful for comic books which don't have any way to look up text...
