Device: Sony PRS-T2, Kindle PaperWhite 2013, Pocketbook InkPad2.
alternative would be pocketbook touch hd. It has page button navigation similar to sony's (if that something that you like).

Have you also considered looking for a used e-reader through ebay (if you like the sony's)? I got an used t2 for less than $40 usd before, and it was in good condition

Do not buy a Kindle from eBay. Lots of them are blacklisted and that means they cannot be registered with Amazon.

I can't speak for another user, but I think they were suggesting purchasing another Sony through eBay.

Using manual scrolling the movement doesn't really have to be fluid. On my Nexus phone, a pretty fast phone, using Moon+, I scroll and it moves smoothly. When I used to read on a 2nd gen Moto E with Moon+ I'd slide my finger down and wait a fraction of a second while it paused and then scrolled and sometimes paused halfway through the scroll as well. That's not nearly as nice but it's okay.

I'm worried that it'll be a lot worse than that on e-ink, partly because of the slower screen and even more because of the slower CPU and no GPU. I guess I wouldn't mind if it was slightly clumsy but I worry it might be worse than that.

This is not correct. Ebooks from Overdrive provide the choice of downloading ePub or Kindle versions. You are provided a choice from the Overdrive library app. The advantage of Kindle library books is that most are delivered to your reader via wireless so you don't have to connect it to another program like Adobe Digital Editions. It's very slick.

Unfortunately, this is only true in the US. In other countries, only EPUB is available.

I did forget to add in that it's for outside the USA. I went back and edited the post. But,I have come across some eBooks in the US at Overdrive where there is only an ePub edition.
