It's very much a personal decision, of course, but I suspect that the combined cost of those extended warranties is a significant proportion of the price of at least a PW? Very much depends on your track record of breakages. As I say, for me it's none in over 30 years and probably 20 or so devices in that time.

Does the extended warranted cover user error, e.g., me sitting on my kindle and breaking the screen? That's the most likely scenario for my kindle to stop working.

Yes. An extended warranty is an insurance policy, not really a warranty at all, and (unlike the manufacturer's warranty) covers accidental damage.

Yes like he said, after fumbling my hdx while taking a photo, dropping it , breaking the unrepairable screen, I decided to spend £75 on square trade 3 years cover for the next one, rather than risk another £200+ write off. Actually I sold it as broken for spares in about one hour on eBay for £25, so that eased the pain a little. Accidental damage, like dropping it, sitting on it, is included. It also makes it their problem to source a replacement, not easy for HDX, should I break it.

FWIW I had to take this approach with them when my Voyage stopped accepting a charge. I would have been happy to return it for a repair but they wouldn't consider that an an option.

Probably depends which country you're in. EU consumer law is a lot more generous in this respect than US law is, for example. In EU countries you can't offer a fixed-term warranty - you have to provide warranty repair or replacement for a period of time that's "reasonable" for the product.

Here in the US, I can buy a costco squaretrade warranty for $89 to cover any TV over $1000. That seems completely reasonable, and it's what many people over avsforum (audio video science) buy for multi thousand dollar TV sets. £75 to cover £200 is a tough one for me to bite. Of course now I've jinxed myself and will promptly break my next kindle :/ |

Well, interestingly I got a refurbished one as a replacement. Nothing was mentioned about this, but the box was clearly marked refurbished.
Not too bothered, though, to be blunt I was expecting a repair, and you really couldn't tell the refurbished one from a new one to be quite honest. The price of refurbished voyages in the UK is rediculous, mind. Its about £10 less than the new one on a £170 item. |

Devices which have been returned in the "return within 30 days for any reason" clause of Amazon's sales terms. They're checked, cleaned, reboxed, and sent out as refurbs.

Funny this just happened to mine too, my Voyage is about 27 months old. The very bottom of my screen was probably malfunctioning for a long time, greater than one year for sure. I have always had trouble switching the reading progress indicator in the bottom left corner. But gradually over the last month it's gotten worse and worse till Saturday night it became unusable. I did manage to get it reset after great difficulty and once I reset it the thing is useless as there is no way I'm going to be able to type my email and password into it.
I'm in the US, Amazon offered me a 20% discount so I took the plunge and am replacing the Voyage with an Oasis. I think I will like the Oasis better except for the stock cover not propping it up on a table like the Voyage. I really liked that feature of the Voyage, although I really didn't find the Voyage that great to hold in my hands for reading in bed, etc.. I still have a 2nd gen Paperwhite (I had given it to my wife but she never used it), so I had a free option available but I've really become rather used to the newer/better screens. In terms of ordering a new one it was a tossup between a 3rd gen Paperwhite and splurging on the Voyage I guess. If they hadn't offered the discount it would have been 3rd Gen Paperwhite for sure I think. I may open the Voyage up.. it's probably a loose/bad ribbon cable. Since it's just getting recycled why not. |
