The Aura and the Glo HD do NOT support Overdrive (right now) and we don't know if they ever will.

Thanks. I had seen that seller linked in another thread here and checked it out, but with the current exchange rate, plus the shipping costs, it feels like too much for a used model. I can probably get a new Edition 2 on a Black Friday sale for not a whole lot more. But that does seem like a great deal if you are in the US.

PeterT, I did actually check kijiji but all they had were ads from liquidationmania.com, which does have original Auras and could be promising. No Glo HDs, unfortunately.

So is the original Aura better than the Edition 2? I think the flush screen on the original sounds better, but I have seen people saying that the lighting on the Edition 2 is superior. I do need it to be readable in a very dark space on occasion.

I have read that they likely will not, but at least you do have the option of getting library books via the computer onto the device which will never happen with a Kindle. Though to be honest, that is such a hassle that I don't do it often. I am hoping for a smaller device in the future that has the OverDrive function on it like the Kobo Aura One.

The Aura Edition 2 has Overdrive and it is smaller than the Aura One. Also, the Aura Edition 2 has a Carata screen. The Aura does not have a Carta screen. The Aura uses a Pearl screen. No comparison. The Carta screen much nicer. I have a T1 and I much prefer a Carta screen to the Pearl screen used on the Sony T series.

You mean the Edition 2 has the built in Overdrive feature? I read in several reviews that only the Aura ONE had this feature. If the Edition 2 has it then it would be no contest!

Edit: if you just mean it has the capability to use overdrive via the computer and transferring to the device, you can do that with any Kobo. It is a hassle though. I'm dreaming of the built-in functionality that will allow me to get books straight from the device.

My mistake. I was looking at the Aura Edition 2 user guide and it mentions Overdrive. But it's just how to get from the computer to the Reader.

In the UK I bought from eucomtech, but conrad and sotel also ship from Germany (Tolino is not officially supported in the UK). Within much of the rest of Europe, sourcing is easier. Across the Atlantic, I have no idea.

Within Europe the Shine 2 HD is competitively priced against the new Aura (2nd edition)

In any event, if the OP would like to download directly to the reader rather than via a computer then the Tolino is not really viable for English language users.

Sadly, at present for a new 6" reader with a 300dpi screen (personally, I do think there is a noticeable difference between 212 and 300 dpi), one gets a Kindle or one tries to source from one of the more limited brands (in Europe, that includes Tolino, Pocketbook and Cybook primarily).

Tolino has a UK website. Why do they have one if you cannot buy from them in the UK?

http://mytolino.uk/

This makes no sense at all. maybe Tolino should tank and go out of business since they seem not to be able to get their act together.

So my recommendation is NOT to buy one of their Readers since they have no idea what they are doing,

If you're near a city get a used device via Craigslist.

Yes, only the Aura ONE has the full Overdrive function enabled on it. You need one if you want to connect the Overdrive account to your Kobo account and borrow books from Overdrive on the device.

But, any Kobo device running firmware 4.0 or later supports downloading books borrowed from Overdrive. If you can get the accounts connected, and borrow a book, it is added to your Kobo library and synced to all devices and Kobo apps. So, you should be able to borrow an Aura ONE, log into your Kobo account on it and set-up overdrive. Then log out and return it. Then books borrowed from supported libraries would appear on your other Kobo device.

As to full support on the other devices, I am quite sure that it will come. Kobo do like to introduce new function exclusively to new devices and add them to the other devices later. But, I don't expect it in the next firmware released to the other devices. Maybe it will be the first release next year. Or, as Kobo like to do March/April and September/October releases of new products, the March/April timeframe would be sensible even if they don't release a new device.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I think I will wait for Black Friday sales and see if I can grab an Edition 2 on sale. If that doesn't pan out I will try to find a good deal on an original Aura.

I'm surprised. I thought one of the selling points of Kobo was that they keep a single firmware base for all their devices; hence old ereaders getting new features as newer devices come to market.

For the most part, that's true. However, it appears that full Overdrive integration is currently an exception. That may change; the older devices haven't had a firmware update since the introduction of the two latest Aura devices. Then again, the Aura Edition 2 doesn't have full Overdrive integration. *shrugs*

I would love to have the Overdrive capability on my H2O, but to be honest, the current setup isn't exactly onerous, even when using ADE 2.0 on FreeBSD.

That did surprise me. I can understand not rolling it back to older devices, but it seems they would have been perfectly safe adding Overdrive to the Aura 2. There's still plenty to distinguish the two devices.
