The reviews for the original Aura tended to say it was a fine, but expensive reader (though cheaper than the Aura HD). It was also flashy with its flat bezel. And while I agree that the Glo HD is better than the Aura 2, Kobo obviously couldn't justify keeping the device on the market at that price, or they have something grand up their sleeve. It's a shame they couldn't keep the same nice Carta screen in the Aura 2. At least then it could compete with the Paperwhite 3. I really don't know who they are marketing the Aura 2 to, except for Kobo owners whose current device breaks. Last edited by ZodWallop; 11-04-2016 at 04:51 PM. |

I have all 3 models of the Paperwhite and I use the PW2 and PW3 interchangeably and I really can't tell the difference. I realize others can but I can't and I doubt most people can. The Aura 2 and the Glo HD have the same screen density relationship as my Paperwhites so I really think most people who buy the Aura 2 are going to be happy with it. Personally I like my old Aura. Time marches on and much as I loved my Sonys, I was ready for a brighter and lighter, smaller reader for my purse. I was waiting on the new releases, but when I saw the Aura 2 I read the writing on the wall and jumped on a Glo HD. My point? The 212 ppi resolution of the Glo, the Aura 2 and the PW 2 isn't good enough when there's better. The 265 ppi of the H2O was fine; I don't get added utility that I'm aware of from 300 ppi. But 212 is unacceptable to me; obviously MMV as yours obviously does. All of that said, I agree with your analysis. Kobo is carving out its market where Amazon doesn't go, that of larger screens. The Aura 2 is just so they have an entry in the lit, 6" market, but they've cheapened it so it's not a loss. Alrighty; I've got my Glo HD, so I'm good. And there's no point in buying ahead, so I'll just have to see what the market brings down the line. |

I will say that I'm happy with my Aura and if it were to be squashed by a steamroller, I'd likely order an Aura 2 as a replacement. When I checked out a Voyage at Best Buy, the screen wasn't monumentally better to my eyes than my Nook ST. I mean really, it's black-ish text on a white-ish background. It doesn't take too much to look presentable. Or my standards aren't high. Take your pick. But having said all that, if you were a newbie wanting to buy your first e-reader and you were comparing the Aura 2 to the Paperwhite 3, odds are the Paperwhite 3 would win. |

What puzzles me that a review like this is exactly the opposite of the forum opinion...

I'm just as happy reading my Paperwhite 2 as my Paperwhite 3 even though one is 212 ppi and the other is 300 ppi. I literally can't tell the difference. They're in different color cases but if they weren't I doubt I'd usually know which one I'm using. That's not quite the same as comparing them to my original Kobo Aura. It has a much less evenly lit screen. I can definitely tell the difference even though the difference doesn't bother me. But it's there and fairly obvious. The same is true with my Paperwhite 1. It's not as evenly lit as the later models. I can instantly tell which one I'm using. But it fine for reading and I don't care. Between the PW 2 and PW 3 I can't see any difference even side by side. I think increasing the density is more for marketing purposes than anything else. We give up a little battery life. A few people's experience is improved. Probably Manga readers like it more. But most of us just can't see a difference. People who are guided by specs will buy the 300 ppi. People who are guided by appearance will buy either one. Barry |

To give you a small idea of the quality of their work, the details in this article by them: http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...n-the-aura-one was directly cut and pasted from here on Mobileread with no acknowledgement or attribution (and it wasn't Kobo that said any of it as they claimed). And that's not the 1st time that's happened. |

This needs a fair bit of qualification: Amazon is the market leader in the USA and some other countries. That doesn't make them the tech leader or the operating system leader or anything else. |

Yes, but that discussion carried across multiple devices of varying quality.
This started as a recommendation for a replacement for the Kobo Glo. Recommendations as a replacement were the Aura H20 or the Glo HD. Which is also what the video you linked to recommended. Then discussion switched to the Glo HD no longer being produced and the reasons behind it. Kobo has not come out with a definitive statement. They haven't even said that it has been discontinued. But general consensus is that the profit margin on the Glo HD just wasn't enough to justify its continued production. It has been replaced by the lower spec'd Aura 2. At the same price point, Amazon seems to have no trouble with the Paperwhite 3 which is comparable to the Glo HD (as the video showed) and has a nicer screen than the Aura 2. Amazon can do this because they are to e-readers what Apple is to phones. To the general public, they are seen as the best, regardless of professional reviews of comparable devices. I would much rather have a Kobo than a Kindle. But then I hang naround nerdy boards like this one. I use Calibre. I buy my books from Amazon, strip the DRM and convert them. If my mom who lives out of state decided to try an e-reader, I wouldn't recommend this. I would recommend a Kindle Paperwhite 3. |

Just a question as I have not researched it myself. Do you know of any market where Amazon officially sells the Kindle and it is not the #1 e-reader?
As far as I know, anywhere they chose to set up shop, they dominate. But I have not heavily researched that in a while. Quote:
The Kindle will continue to be the benchmark against which comparable devices are judged. You don't have to accept my statement. But as evidence, I will point to Kobo's otherwise inexplicable decision to pull the Glo HD and replace it with the Aura 2. |

I searched and found nothing, particularly on Kobo's on new releases dating back through April: http://news.kobo.com/releases It's still listed on Kobo's site, though it is out of stock. Last edited by ZodWallop; 11-06-2016 at 01:52 PM. |
